BANGKOK (NNT) - Dr Somsak Akksilp, director-general of the Department of Medical Services (DMS), has confirmed that Thailand will move forward with procuring 2 million tablets of the Molnupiravir COVID-19 treatment drug. The move comes amid reports that France has cancelled its own order of the anti-COVID pill due to unsatisfactory test results.

Last week, France became the first country to publicly cancel its Molnupiravir procurement with Merck, citing disappointing trial data. It instead made an order for a similar drug being produced by Pfizer.

Merck released data in late November indicating that Molnupiravir was considerably less effective than initially expected. According to clinical trials, the drug reduces hospitalizations and fatalities among high-risk cases by just 30-40%.

The Thai Ministry of Public health signed a contract with Merck for 50,000 courses of the Molnupiravir pill to be delivered in January.

Dr Somsak noted that the contract with Merck specifies that Thailand can reconsider its order based on decisions by other countries and their usage of the drug.

He added that the latest reports show the United Kingdom actually increased its Molnupiravir order to 1.75 million courses on December 22 while Japan ordered an additional 1.6 million courses on December 24.

The director-general also pointed out that the situation surrounding the antiviral drug is still in flux.

Anyone knows if thailand also ordered any Novavax?

They haven't.

I think it has emergency approval in the EU and India as of this morning.

Anutin says Pfeizer and Astra Zeneca Will be the main vaccines in Thailand.

Hes only ordered 30 million doses of Pfeizer.

Astra will be produced in drips and drabs like last year.

Last year the main vaccines were (guess):

1) Astra Zeneca

2) Sinovac

Last year they vaccinated over 36 million front line workers and other Thais with Sinovac.

I think this will end up biting them in the rear as results from Sinovac against the Omicron variant are practically non existent.

They'll have to revaccinate everyone who has vaccinated with Sinovac.

Most Sinovac receptors have had a second or third shot of one of the other vaccines. Everyone, whatever their initial shot(s), is having to be revaccinated. Western worshippers included.

Its the Chinese Worshipers that'll be having the problems.

Unfortunately, against medical professionals, Anutin and his cronies kept ordering Sinovac and Sinopharm.

Unfortunately thats more than half the Thai population.

So basically those people haven't been vaccinated.

...So a "booster" of Pfeizer would actually just be one shot.  Because your not boosting anything.

However, many people prescribed Pfizer’s or Merck’s new medications will require careful monitoring by doctors and pharmacists, and the antivirals may not be safe for everyone, experts caution.  https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/pfizer-covid-pills-covid-symptoms-may-risky-drugs-rcna9683

That is a little bit concerning. If France isn't satisfied, why is the Thai government?
