Dirty and dangerous
For decades, the US produced most of its electricity from coal-fired plants, however by 2011 America generated about only half of its electricity from coal plants and by 2023 this figure had fallen to 9 per cent. It is estimated the industry now employs fewer than 50,000 people. On 8 April, Trump signed an executive order vowing to revive the coal industry as he had done in his first term, however there were fewer miners employed when he left office in 2021 than when he became president. “I call it beautiful, clean coal,” said Trump. “I tell my people never use the word coal unless you put ‘beautiful, clean’ before it.”. Experts say coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel and may make up as much as 40 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to global warming. In addition the coal is likely to be dirtier than previously. The White House said some plants would be able to “comply with a less stringent version of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) rule for two years, instead of the more onerous version put in place by the Biden administration”. Grundy, a coal town in southern Virginia, was labelled the “sickest town in America” by The Atlantic magazine. Around 20 per cent of residents under 65 were on disability payments and a quarter lived beneath the poverty line. Conditions such as black lung and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were common. DOGE's actions have made the miners' jobs more dangerous DOGE have forced the closure of many offices occupied by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, an agency responsible for enforcing safety laws. Also cut were staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who monitored the health of miners, including checking for black lung. They operated a mobile screening service and worked with doctors in coal communities, telling them what to look out for. Sam Petsonk, a lawyer in Oak Hill, West Virginia, represents miners. Speaking to National Public Radio about the programme, he said: “It’s a bedrock institution for the medical profession that has been obliterated. It’s just unacceptable.'' Trump Eyes Wave of New Trade Deals Amid 90-Day Tariff Pause
One can only hope that it is none, any that have signed have been conned. From the AI. TTIP and ISDS: The proposed TTIP between the US and EU sparked a debate about ISDS, with the EU initially proposing a permanent investment court and the US advocating for ISDS, which has been a common feature in many trade agreements. EU's perspective: The EU, while supporting ISDS in general, expressed concerns about its potential impact on the ability of governments to regulate in the public interest and sought to reform the system, potentially through a permanent investment court. US's perspective: The US viewed ISDS as vital for protecting investors' rights and the enforceability of trade agreements. Negotiation Status: The TTIP negotiations, which were ongoing for several years, ultimately ended without a finalized agreement, including a resolution on ISDS. Current Status: There is no formal trade agreement between the US and EU that includes ISDS. -
