Therapeutic Massage in Pattaya (Jomtien) by practitioner who is science-based and knowledgeable.

Looking for Therapeutic Massage for a recurring back issue and would like leads to a good practitioner who knows what they are doing.

 

Living in Chiang Mai I had an excellent one but it took a long time to find one that REALLY knew what they were doing, understood anatomy, and had a science-based approach that yielded quick results.

 

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Nigel Kelsey, though he is just off Pattaya Tai as opposed to Jomtien.

The fella absolutely knows his stuff and one I can recommend without hesitation.

Thanks so much, I took a look at his Google map page and all the feedback sounds like you described...just the type of doctor I'm looking for I think.  Most appreciated ????

Any other suggestions besides Nigel Kelsey?  I've been trying to reach him for 3 days without response.  The pain is worsening so I need to find a competent and responsive practitioner.

This guy may have retired, i vaguely remember a Facebook post, several people were trying to contact him

If his premises are still as was then just as likely he is elsewhere especially with the issues of practicing during Covid. I remember him going AWOL before for some months (I think in low season)  but also you may be right.

I was able to reach Dr. Kelsey a few minutes ago.  He informed me that he has indeed retired. 

 

I have to say I was a little put off by his attitude when I asked him if he could recommend someone else, and was told only flatly that "there is no one else", and didn't seem to want to offer any useful suggestion.  That is not exactly the attitude of a good practitioner to simply leave someone in distress with no helpful advice, reardless of whether or not he is retired. ????

 

I can not believe that in the population of all of the expats on this forum, nobody has any advice on finding a good practitioner that treats back pain and has a good science-based background for treatment.

 

Still hoping somebody can offer some helpful advice...

The doctor does not owe you anything.  Your problem is not his problem.  He is retired.  You interrupted his retirement.  Did you apologize profusely before doing so?  Do you understand retired?  You think it means there are still strings to the old job that was purposely forgotten to allow moving on to more important stuff like fishing or photography?

Perhaps there really was nobody he could honestly recommend.  I had a doctor in the US who honestly could not recommend anyone when he was moving out of state.  That happens even with carpenters and electricians.

 

Or perhaps WaveHunter's warm friendly attitude just rubbed the good Doctor wrong so he responded accordingly.

If its not too far for you there is a place in Chak Neow that is the village just past the entrance to Phoenix golf club in Ban Ampur.

 

Its run by one of the doctors from Wat Yan hospital, the girls are young but qualified physiotherapists, they are fully equipped with ultra sound, micro tens, heating pads and seemingly a lot of knowledge about backs.  Costs b800 for a one hour session so not cheap.

 

I can probably dig out the phone number if of any interest to you.

First of all, there was no indication from anyone on this forum or elsewhere that he was, in fact, retired.  His Google page showed patient feedback from only one month ago, and his business phone is still connected. 

 

So, just how would I know he was retired until I finally reached him on the phone today after four days of leaving messages, and why would I owe him an apology for calling?

 

Your comment was unhelpful and obviously designed to bait me into a heated exchange, like you've often done in the past.  I've never understood the perverse pleasure you seem to get from such behavior, but if that's your thing I hope my reply makes you happy ????

Hi RImmer,  That sounds promising.  If you could give me contact info. I'd sure appreciate it. 

 

All I'm really looking for is a science-based practitioner.  I didn't think it would be that hard to find someone who simply understands anatomy and physiology enough to provide effective treatment, but what you describe sounds good to me!

Unfortunately after Dr (Pack?) I think Nigel was the only one left doing anything remotely like osteo/chiro although he never claimed to be such. There was a Danish or similar guy who tried to start up years ago but I think he had "bureaucratic" issues and did not last long.

With Nigel's retirement that is going to leave a bit of a hole unfortunately - and hence the lack of advice.

With all fairness to him, he did mention that one reason he retired was the hassle he had to put up with trying to get a work permit, and perhaps he just got fed up with the typical Thai bureaucracy, which I can certainly understand.

 

It's just real frustrating to realize that a city as large as Pattaya doesn't have one single practitioner that stands out from the crowd as the go-to guy.  In Chiang Mai, I had an excellent massage therapist who was actually a highly trained sports injury specialist with a Masters degree in sports medicine.  He was outstanding and was well known with cyclists and runners.

 

Oh well, this is Thailand ????

Perhaps trying to find a good theraputic massage place is challenging, as there are so many general massage parlours in Thailand? 

 

But a Google search for Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy Clinic seems to get some possible options.

There is a Russian guy operating out of the bottom of Centre Condo who comes highly recommended. A friend of mine saw him for rehab on his knee after a ACL repair and other stuff. Quite a few foreigners in there when I went to talk to him.

There also used to be a Physio operation out of Diana Estates - the one with the driving range, but not sure if they are still going.

However not sure that is what the OP was looking for?

I'd really like to find a decent therapist here in Pattaya.  My best bet (as suggested by @Kinnock) is to look for a physical therapist but my experience with almost all of them I've used in the past is that they really are not too effective and usually just use a conservative and ineffective "cookie-cutter" approach to treatment.

 

What's even worse is that many have a very weak understanding of anatomy so almost none of them really understand true deep tissue massage (as bizarre as that sounds).

 

The only physical therapist that offered me effective treatment was a sports injury specialist up in Chiang Mai that REALLY understood deep tissue massage / muscle release techniques and also had a Master's degree in Sports Medicine.

 

At this point I would gladly fly up to Chiang Mai for treatment however, just like with Nigel, Immigration is also on his back, hassling him about his long-stay visa!  I swear, the bureaucratic red tape in Thailand is just ridiculous!

 

Just another one of the challenges of being an expat in Thailand ????

Has anyone ever had physio therapy by Dr. Natchaya "Nat" Bamrungchua of Royal Physiotherapy Clinic in Pattaya?  He sounds really good.  Would love to get some feedback from anyone who's been treated by him.

For anyone looking for a really good physiotherapist in Pattaya, I can highly recommend Dr. Natchaya "Nat" Bamrungchua of Royal Physiotherapy Clinic. 

 

I called for an appointment this afternoon and was seen at 5pm.  After just this initial session I am out of acute pain!  Unlike many PT's, he not just addressing the pain symptoms but more importantly, the underlying cause so that in several more sessions, I will not only be out of pain completely but hopefully will not have future flair ups. 

 

If anyone has had issues with the the Quadratus Lumborum and the SI joint, you know it can be incredibly painful and take forever to resolve on its' own.  Most PT's really don't have a clue how to resolve this and only resort to meaningless massage, even more ineffectual chiropractic techniques, and pain meds.  That is not his approach at all!  

 

His credentials are excellent; he has numerous degrees. and certifications from universities around the world including Cambridge and Oxford in the UK, and most importantly he has an incredible grasp on anatomy and body mechanics, and an understanding of how to correct the underlying causes, not just make the pain go away.

 

He's a good man who really cares about his patients, and has the knowledge and skill to do what most physiotherapists simply can not do!  If you have a PT issue, you'd be wise to check him out.  He is Thai but is fluent in English so communication is excellent, and he likes to not only treat you but educate you.  He's also just a really nice person!
