Thailand rice exports expected to rise sharply

BANGKOK, THAILAND — Thailand is forecast to export 8 million tonnes of rice in the 2021-22 marketing year, up 31% from the previous year, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

 

Attractive Thai prices, driven by the weakening of the Thai baht, are the reason for the sharp increase in exports, the report said.

 

Rice production is projected to increase year-on-year from 18.8 million tonnes to 20.8 million tonnes, the USDA said.

Not much weakening , plus increase of rice production in other countries ,

Thai baht isn't weakening much, and they still have to compete with other producing countries.

Well, why not weaken the Baht a boatload, so they can sell more rice, and most everything they make here more competitively?  
Thailand must choose between a future of Belt and Road servitude, or an independent, competitive and vibrant economy.

Seems to be a surplus around lately. In Big C this morning and dozens of bags reduced in price piled up.  Not just junk but the good stuff as well.

No worries, the Baht strengthened a bit today.  The article probably took data from several weeks ago when the Baht was 1-2% lower than today.  The higher the Baht—the worse the economy.  They should understand that by now.
