Concern mounts over animal welfare in Thailand after hefty cut in feed budget

Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is complaining about a hefty cut in budget for animal feed, from about 90 million baht annually to just 10 million baht this year, but promises that it will do its best to keep about 26,000 animals in captivity fed.

 

Director of the Wildlife Conservation Division Sompong Thongseekhem said the 10 million baht budget for animal feed is barely enough for the animals, which need at least 55 million baht to keep them adequately fed.

 

The animals are kept at 23 breeding stations, three care centres and one centre for the study and management of animals.

I can not help but  have a cynical response to this . Has the feed budget been cut to that actual degree or is it that the dispensation to things other than feed only leaves that amount which is claimed to be insufficient?

They are real Buddhists, aren't they? Cutting the feed budget by more than 88%, thereby starving the poor creatures.

 

Thailand - the amazing "Buddhist" country, where money is #1, and anything that doesn't bring quick cash gets ignored or abandoned...

Breeding stations????  Do they mean they are farming wild animals?  Why?  Are they selling them for meat?   

 

And what is the Center for Study and Management of animals?  Again...they are wild animals.  Thing you are supposed to study and manage them in the WILD in the national parks, not in cages. 

 

All seems dodgy to me.   

 

Except for rescued or injured animals that are kept till they recover and they are released into the wild, then there is no reason to be keeping them in captivity.

Oh yes there is a very good reason, it's called survival of the officials running the centres  and creaming off every Baht they can get there hands on.
