Thailand on Tuesday (March 8th) reported 18,943 new COVID-19 cases, 25,005 recoveries and 69 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,066,800 with 23,369 deaths.

The news comes as the BA.2 sub variant of the COVID-19 Omicron variant is spreading rapidly across Thailand and is replacing the BA.1 as the dominant sub variant.

Medicine which is effective against the Delta variant and BA.1 is not as effective against the BA.2, according to Director-General of the Medical Sciences Department Dr. Supakit Sirilak.

Dr. Supakit said that BA.2 now accounts for 51.8% of Omicron cases and the rest (48.2%) are the BA.1, a clear indication that BA.2 is spreading faster than BA.1.

Just for comparison, here's a chart on Covid deaths and Road deaths since 13th Feb up till yesterday, road deaths source here

Truly no comparison, other than the sheer numbers of road deaths.  Imagine if the road deaths rode the same wave as the Covid deaths, now that would be truly ugly, yet it might finally get the RTP to enforce the laws.

PCR test positive cases, total of 18,943 official new infections. 69 official covid deaths recorded.

Rapid tests positive cases, 19,622 bringing the total of PCR and ATK results to 38,565

Just read about that......doctor said typical figures, if the truth was told, are around 40,000 to 50,000 per day currently.

Doubt it....as far as I can tell there are only three police not currently involved in the investigation into the death of Tangmo.

DTangmo has taken over even the news reports on Covid.  I understand many would like all reporting of Covid to stop but then that would just be disingenuous of governments.  If they did so then they need to open up access to the databases again so those interested can find those statistics just like the annual flu and so on so comparisons can be made.

Slightly off topic, but is it still the case that victims who expire in hospital some hours after the accident are still not included in the road death figures?

What is true?? we will never know...Did the people really died of Covid or were there other diseases already??? What about people who died at home maybe because of Covid or triggered by Covid?? Always Tuesday the lowest cases of the week. But I know that there are cases that are not counted, as in my school several kids were tested positive with no symptons and they just went home. without a check at the hospital.... and how about people who don't to stay in quarantine because they don't have any symptons?? Are telling that they are Covid positive??

Was the great man Anutin wrong?

Did he speak prematurely when he declared Thailand #1 in the fight against Covid?

Is it possible he has no idea what he is talking about, and will say or do anything to promote himself?

Is it possible choosing the lowest quality vaccine available is now coming back to haunt them?

Is it possible the highly selective economic shutdowns did not work after all?

So many questions. So few answers, except when it comes to the historic failure of Anutin and Prayuth.

Comparison is important but it's perhaps not the best subject to choose. Flu and other respiratory viruses would likely be better if reliable numbers are available in Thailand.

(When this is done in the UK, some surprising facts came to light. In fact overall death rates have actually fallen, partly driven by a big reduction in fatalities caused by RSV and influenza.)

Of course UK, like most, effectively vaccinated all its old people.

Despite officially reported new COVID cases falling for a fourth consecutive day to 18,943, new COVID deaths, serious cases in hospital and COVID patients needing intubation to breathe all rose again Tuesday to set new record highs for the year.

With Tuesday's update by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, daily COVID deaths now at 69 are almost six times their number at the start of the year. Serious COVID cases in hospital, now at 1,189, have more than doubled their level since the start of the year, and the same with COVID patients (400) requiring intubation to breathe.

With Tuesday's update, the daily number of COVID deaths has risen for three consecutive days, and four consecutive days for the number of serious COVID cases in hospital. The number of COVID patients requiring intubation to breath has risen daily for the past week. And that's even with the rising numbers of daily COVID deaths.

Tuesday's update, though, marked the first time in the past week that Thailand's new officially reported daily COVID cases dropped below the 19,000 mark. That was a positive sign as the recent dropoff in new officially reported cases and also unofficial ATK positive cases continued into this week, even though daily deaths and the numbers of serious COVID hospitalizations are continuing to rise.

Thailand's seven-day-average positivity rate for COVID testing, after peaking at more than 30% in recent days, has lately declined somewhat and has been hovering around 27%, which still is extremely high.

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and intubated patients peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

Of course UK, like most, effectively vaccinated all its old people.

Well, they vaccinated the ones that were left. During the first year thousands perished after the government decided to discharge all oldies from hospital back to nursing homes without testing them.

In England, there have been 43,256 deaths of care home residents involving COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. This accounted for 16.6% of all care home residents’ deaths. In the first wave, 23.2% (19,783) of deaths in care home residents involved COVID-19. This proportion fell between the second and third wave, from 20.9% (20,766) to 3.6% (2,707).

COVID-19 was the leading cause of death in male care home residents in England in the first wave, and the second leading cause in the second wave. In female residents, COVID-19 was the second leading cause in the first and second wave.
