One person died, another was blinded and 31 others fell sick. Dr Thatri Sunpongsri said that the cons had been collecting the gel over a period of time ready for New Year. He noted that alcohol is banned in prisons. Around 4-5 convicts were hospitalized and the rest had mild symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and stomach problems because they did not consume very much. Now virtually all hand gel has been replaced by soap in prisons nationwide with inmates warned about the perils of consuming ethanol and methanol.
