Wikipedia Silently Blocked? (true, Bkk)

Last two days I cannot reach Wikipedia at all, it just silently dies. This is usually due to a routing-issue or silent block.

Does anyone else have an issue reaching the site? Not sure if it's a co-incident but I was reading about the TRF just two days ago and noticed not all articles are super-positive...

Must be your connection provider (ISP) overselling his bandwidth (common) and not having enough to go 'round so just cut some stuff out here and there, ad hoc, no worries mate, she'll be right, go burn some incense at temple.....

No, there is indeed a silent block in place. Every other sub-page works, including 'Wiktionaries' and 'Wikiquote'. Also EVERY other language works, just not 'en.wikipedia.org' (English and most often linked site). Even th.wikipedia.org works. I have however found that some directories of upload.wikimedia.org does not.

I don't care how much I have to see according to you... The only thing I see is, that I get in without any trouble AND that I use True ADSL in Bkk and contrary to your message I'm not blocked, neither with sound nor silent.l

I'm not sure if you are a newcommer, but blocks only affecting partial ISPs have been discovered in the past. Search for a lot of topics regarding it in the general forum. Very often it can be working on one C-net but not another C-net, or in this case perhaps even A and B-net.

I'm on 124.120.*.* right now. So instead of saying that is works for you, let me know what range you are on and anyone that might have problems (unfortuanly most visitors will never see this topic since this subforum isn't highly visited) can give their input on their ranges.

Today I got onto another range: 124.120.81.*, from being on .71.* above for two-three days. I can now access the site.

Also noticed that Wintermute posted in another thread that he had problems. So there is indeed some block, but only affecting one or a few D-net's, even lower then I was suspecting above.

if you have an icon in your systray for your connection (in XP the icon looks like two small 'computers', one placed behind the other), you can click the icon -> should bring up a dialog/informationbox with your connections name and being on the tab 'General', containing info about connectiontime, amount sent and recieved and so on. Click the tab Details -> Here you will see a listview with information, look for 'Client IP Adress'. That is your IP.

You can also try visiting http://whatismyip.com/ or any other site like this. Should, in most cases, give you the correct IP. Last year and before however it mostly gave the ISPs transparent proxys IP for TRUE.

I'm on True DSL in Bangkok and I'm getting a network error message as well, this only started today. I was worried that it might be blocked, or in the process of being blocked and sure enough others are as well. (If the MICT is stupid enough to have blocked youtube, wikipedia shouldn't be too much of a surprise. There is information on Wikipedia that the junta would not like.)

This event has been on the board elsewhere, but I figured next Tuesday at the FCCT might be a good time and place to ask about wikipedia if it's still not working for some (or all) of us then.

When Thailand’s coup leaders appointed Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom to head the all-important telecommunications ministry, there were already hints of drama set to unfold. The take-over by Temasek Holdings — the Singapore government’s investment arm – of Shin Corp, Thailand’s largest telecommunications empire, had triggered mass protests that led to the coup, and Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, the army chief and coup leader, had publicly demanded that Thailand “take back” Shin’s satellites, which he viewed as strategic national assets. Gen. Sonthi even claimed that Singapore could use Shin telecom facilities to spy on Thailand, posing a major security threat.

The man chosen to lead the charge and defend Thai national security – Dr. Sitthichai – was known as an avid gun-collecting, Australian-educated world expert in analogue electronics, who had made a small fortune as founder of a successful Thai engineering company, developed Bangkok taxi meters, and used some of his wealth to establish Thailand’s largest private technological university. While the university earned attention for building its own earth-mapping satellite as an orbiting laboratory, Dr Sitthichai was the first Thai member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. What had, perhaps, garnered less attention was the fact that he had also built his own euthanasia machine to end his life.

But there is still much more to know about this son of a Shanghai Kumintang general who emigrated to Thailand after falling out with Chiang Kai-shek. Revealing among them is the fact that the telecommunications minister has little use for Internet and he has no time for e-mail. “I am old fashioned,” he told the International Herald Tribune in a recent story. “I don’t like to type. I just like to talk.” Yet that has not stopped him from earning a reputation as censor-in-chief for a government that apparently sees serious threats to national security emanating from the web. The growing list of web sites censored in Thailand has outraged media freedom groups.

In early April, Dr. Sitthichai took his boldest step when he ordered the popular video-sharing web site YouTube blocked, after it aired videos insulting to Thailand’s revered monarch. The decision has touched off a major debate about censorship and access to information – a debate likely to continue. Meanwhile, Dr Sitthichai is busy renegotiating, the telecommunications concessions for Thailand’s mobile phone operators, which could have a wide ranging impact on this crucial sector, and the foreign investors involved.

IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x are private ip addresses and most likely assigned by your router, not your ISP, and are irrelevant. To know your "real" IP, you need to check at your router or go to a website that reports your IP (like http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/).

Today I tried accessing Wikipedia, only to find that although I could access the main page, the actual information pages were timing out (network error). My ip is 124.120.85.x. Last week I could access it all the time with no problems. True, BKK.

Is there any way to ensure that I get an IP address from a completely different range? I'm on True ADSL in BKK (Saphan Khwai) and while Wikipedia is OK, I'm consistently getting the network timeout on such subversive sites as Hotmail, the default HP advert homepage on a brand new PC, the Windows Update site and the AVG anti-virus update site.

My current IP address is 58.8.177.* and whenever I reconnect my ADSL connection, I either get the same IP address or another one in the same range. I've contacted True to see what they suggest but from experience, I expect I'll get better advice on here!

Edit to add: I'm assuming that it is True that is causing the network timeouts because I don't have any problems when I wirelessly use my router with my laptop. On those occasions, I'm using the company's VPN gateway in Singapore and all sites can be accessed normally...
