BANGKOK (NNT) - An IT distributor has warned Thailand could face a computer shortage in the upcoming months due to economic slowdown and international factors.

According to Chukkrit Watcharasaksilp, chief of sales and marketing at IT distributor Advice, the country’s computer market may experience a shortage between May and June. He attributed the shortage to economic problems as well as China’s recent lockdown due to an increase in Covid-19 infections.

According to the sales and market chief, IT product prices would also rise as a result of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the weaker Baht. Popular computer notebooks cost between 18,000 and 19,000 baht, while popular gaming computers cost between 25,900 and 40,000 baht.

Meanwhile, the organizer of the IT Commart event, ARIP, said there will be no shortage of supplies during the event. The IT event, which is currently being held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), will end this Sunday (3 April). The event is expected to draw around 500,000 people and generate more than 3 billion baht in sales.

Eeeh??? I think this guy should stick to his Buy´n Sell business, and not try to understand market economy and things that might or might not affect.

weaker baht is the more likely explanation, as I expect Russia's war to reduce demand for computers, and as computers aren't made in Russia, an oversupply is to be expected.

but I don't know how long the baht will remain weak, because with the inflation figures we are seeing in Europe and the US, rate hikes become very likely.

Most likely might affect as the war disrupt semiconductor production because Ukraine and Russia are top suppliers of neon gas which is used in the lasers for chip manufacturing and Russia is also a major producer of Palladium, a rare metal used in computer components. Throw in shipping chaos from high energy costs and supply disruption and the lockdown in Shenzhen which is a major tech hub; you have a perfect storm for price increases from computers to Iphone.

When the computers eventually get restocked hopefully there not the circa 2015 4-6 gig models their selling all over the place.

I usually order mine from Amazon.

Cheaper even with shipping and other fees.

Another thread where people think they know more than a Thai expert, simply because he's Thai.

"Manufacturers have seen their stocks of semiconductors plunge amid the global chip shortage, the US Department of Commerce has warned.

A survey of more than 150 firms found supplies had fallen from an average of 40 days' worth in 2019 to just five days in late 2021".

"Unfortunately however, since 2020 there has been one big obstacle that has made building a new PC that much harder – a global silicon chip shortage that has impacted stocks of one crucial component in particular – graphics cards. This has up-ended the normal rules of play".
