Thailand abstains in vote to suspend Russia from UN Human Rights Council

Hardly surprising that the Muppet uttered words like impartial, transparent and inclusive because since his cronies took over in the coup 8 years ago, none of those apply to Thailand.

In fact Thailand's ranking in most global surveys has sunk.

According to the explanation offered by Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, the country voted to abstain due to the overriding importance it attaches to a “transparent, impartial and inclusive approach in the multilateral regime”.

Laughable.

Western hypocrisy at work. The USA shows little respect for human rights; they turn a blind eye to daily abuses by Israel, then there's Guantanamo, and Julian Assange. And they have facilitated the war in Ukraine and continue to fan the flames. I'm surprised so many people swallow their propaganda.

Your lost in your beliefs it appears.  You must also believe the Black lives matter drivel, and if so tell me how the embezzled millions of dollars in donations and purchased houses for members that they claim are campuses....thats hypocrisy.

I don't see any reason to include India into permanent member of the SC. Just because a country has a billion plus population and the West wants to access its thriving and growing middle class market, does not mean India should be included in to SC.

Put India in the UN Security Council as a permanent member and it will just be one more roadblock. Imagine them playing the "abstain" game as a permanent member all the time.

a vote to suspend Russia from UN Human Rights Council over its aggression against Ukraine

Outcome (for reference):-

Vote of ASEAN 10.

Support :      Myanmar,  Philippines

Object  :       Vietnam,  Laos

Abstain :      Thailand,  Singapore,  Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Cambodia

Only surprise to me is Myanmar voting in support.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee met Joe Biden in the White House and had a joint press conference just 10 days ago.   Singapore did not side with USA here in the voting.

Surprisingly yes as Russia supplies the Burmese Military. The country is still represented by its Ambassador appointed during the pre-Junta democracy period. As much as the Burmese military try to replace him, its nominees will be rejected because it forced out a democratically elected Government. This Burmese Ambassador bravely voted for UN sanctions against the current Junta. Quote:-

"Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations Kyaw Moe Tun has urged the international community to step up pressure on the military regime, while vowing to continue resisting the junta for as long as he can"

Thailand is being careful not to upset it's bully neighbour, China, who are close allies of Russia. Thailand isn't big enough to take on China. If China deides that Thailand is the same kind of 'threat' to China as Russia declared the reason for invading the Ukraine. China won't hesitate to invade and annex, knowing full well that the west won't defend it because of fear of starting a neuclear war, which is the reason quoted for not providing real military aid to the Ukraine.

This vote is telling in many ways about larger countries outside of the West and reveals their apathy/contemptuousness, at best, and attitudes toward thus. It is no surprise that places like India/Thailand/Saudi/Pakistan/Iran/Cuba etc. and other authoritarian countries are siding with Russia, as it's familiar ground and have their own MO style wrapped up in it too, plus consider trade and weapons purchases more important.

If you look at who abstained/voted "No", then you are in some very negative company... way-to-go Thailand. Can't sit on the fence forever, you know. There will be blow-back from all this in many ways/places.

What is the issue of Thailand taking a neutral stance and sitting on the fence ?

Thank Buddha that Thailand is neither a winner nor loser from the R Vs U war.

Quoting from your paragraph   "There will be blowing back from all this in many ways/places"  Is it  another way of selling fear ?

BTW,   India which is another country  sitting on the fence will somehow be one of the winner due to this war.      In contrary,  Europe will surely be one of losers.

What this really means is

we are not big enough to look after ourselves & will vote the same way as our Big Brother China does.

In pure economic sense it makes sense, just ask some of the Aussie wine growers that had wine contracts with them.

You cannot eat morals
