Used to be that 200hp was the practical limit for front-wheel drive.

My Omni had 150-ish and magazine instructions said "make sure the front wheels are pointed in the direction you wish to go before applying full throttle".

the bigger numbers are so that you can win the p#ss#ng contest!

I had a Shelby in Australia with 750hp - good straight line speed and goodfor spinning rears - but not good for much else! (sounded good though)

I agree that these tuned/high output vehicles are a waste for road cars

I agree, but I think it starts even with standard cars from the manufacturer.

 

A long time ago in a country far away I had a BMW 323i with about 140 HP. My friend, who worked as a car mechanic at that time called it a rocket. Max speed was about 200km/h and the acceleration was pretty good.

Now, I wonder if BMW sells any cars with less power. I know they sell cars with 3 times that power and more. For what?

 

And if people really use that power, i.e. to go racing or drive on the Autobahn, fine. But what's the point of a fast and powerful  car in Thailand?

Roll racing on the 7 motorway.

 

Got a few friends with big HP cars and its always a great night out.

 

Went out in a friends supra a few weeks ago, it has 1350HP at the wheels.... what a blast that thing is, Its very docile until you get into it.

OK have to ask.  Where did you put the motor and drive train?  I owned an old one of these (1963 I think) that had 36 HP.  Believe me that isn't enough.  LOL

And do you think it's a good idea to do such things on a motorway?

Why not compete on a racetrack without endangering innocent people?

 

And for the record: I also like to drive a little faster from time to time. But there is a difference between fast and insane.

You can do that with a Shelby but a mini? Probably rip the front off it is opened up

Rolling starts are for Indy, WOO, Karts, etc. Standing starts for F1, Moto GP, NHRA, WRC, etc.

 

But I understand that in the real world 40 to 70 mph is more important than 0-60

Roll racing is more 100km/h to 250+km/h, Very easy to eat up a few KM of straight road quickly.

That I understand but straight line speed does nothing for me. I am more into quick than fast.

But I also understand that building a track car for a regulated racing series is more expensive than building road car.

So its not your thing, why take offense to it ?.

 

FWIW a few of the guys I go out with also have "track cars", they compete in the Thailand Super Series.

Here is the actual VW camper van, behind the Escort, the only pic I have.

From factory, it had a 2000cc Audi 4 pot laying on a side angle, loads of room when removed for a 5.7 Chevy small block V8 with a TH350 auto...

 

Sadly we could not get a different ratio ring gear for the axle, so huge diameter tyres were sourced to bring the cruising revs down...

But it was a blast at the stop light drags, it had a badge on the back, "CHEVYDUB"...????

Does no-one else think that the 1000 BHP claim is POOP - what engine & what size supercharger? Does not sound like either are of any substantial displacement!

Perhaps 1000bHP/tonne OR with 800 HP from nitrous?

I am presuming that more horses costs more money. So unusable horses is illogical. But this isn't a game of logic.

 

FWD - I had a 215hp one and while it was quick - it suffered from torque steer - not pleasant.

 

RWD - if you can't maintain traction electronically, you have to be gentle or you'll end up off the road. I have a hi tech but light car that twitches with only 382 horses. If it had 1000 horses, it'd be in a hedge somewhere. Seems an effort 2 drive.

 

Seems to me, a combination of traction and power is where it should be at.

 

But I am presuming people with 1000hp minis are nutty anyway

I have a friend with a 5.7 Chevy V8 in a Fiat 500, another with a 6.3 V8 in a 1971 Vauxhall Firenza, 7.5 Ford V8 in a 1939 Willys, they all have traction built in, though none of them are anywhere near 1000hp, but good fun. Here is the Willys, showing its traction on a street in London ..????

Well - how is it measured? Dyno? OR based in theoretical output?

 

It's a lot of horses to actually use on the road.
