459 road accidents reported on first day of seven dangerous days during Songkran, Thai government reveals

National – Vittawan Sunthornkajit, the Director-General of the Department of Probation, Tuesday, April 12th, revealed the statistics of probation cases ordered by the court on the first day of the seven dangerous days campaign to prevent and reduce road accidents during Songkran.

 

According to the report, a total of 459 road accident cases were reported. Of that, 328 cases were drunk driving, accountable for 71.46 percent, 8 cases involved reckless driving, accountable for 1.74 percent, and the remaining 123 cases were drug driving, accountable for 26.8 percent.

The top three provinces with the highest statistics of drunk driving cases were Nonthaburi with 55 cases, Ubon Ratchathani with 47 cases, and Ayutthaya with 44 cases.

So 98.3% of accidents involved drunk or drugged up drivers?

 

Doesn't pass the sniff test.

Why are they so utterly inept at road safety?

 

I think they just have terrible attitudes towards others in general which they usually hide face to face, but shows on the roads and is amplified by Songkran.

And it's going to go on and on until SOMEBODY in authority gets the traffic police to get off their collectives asses and crack down on errant bike riders and drivers. Maybe they should sack one third of the traffci police (none of whom are doing much) and increase the pay of the remaining two thirds - but make them accountable.

None of them spotted by the police only AFTER an accident!

Must be the people desperate to get to their up country destinations, while escaping the cities.

   Everyone in a hurry, does not help.  I am glad that my Thai family usually just stay near home and

only head out with an extended weekend break. Most are self employed, and get relatives to cover for them

when we come over to have a visit. Makes things much more enjoyable.  Good Luck all you folks who live in the 

Tropical country of Thailand.

100% correct. 

 

The culture ensures that Thais suppress their emotions and opinions, and must show deference to people regardless of merit or moral values.

 

One of the reasons many Thais dislike Westerners in particular is because we find this behaviour heretical to our core systemic values of equality, inclusivity and merit.

 

The Macedonians rebelled against Alexander the Great after he tried to implement Persian traditions such as proskynesis, which is still practiced by the Thais. 

 

As soon as they get in a vehicle they can, to some extent, hide and release themselves from this repressive system.

People will say and threaten to do really bad things to one.

Things that most of them would never say to your face.
