Which Pattaya Restaurants Gave You Food Poisioning?

I've never had food poisioning in Thailand... I'm a bit more paranoid/careful than most, but I'm well aware that is no guarantee that I can't get it. If you ever got some kind of food poisioning here in Pattaya, please tell us where. Of course, just because someone had a past bad experience doesn't mean the restaurant is still bad...

Here an example of the kind of reply I would hope you would make... (of course I'm really hoping no one replies, meaning no one ever got sick here)... but just in case, here's an example of a reasonable writing style for a reply:

SAMPLE: "About a year ago, I went with a prostitute I just picked up on Walking Street, and we went to XYZ Restaurant... we each ordered different things. She ordered some pasta, and was fine... I was feeling for Scottish food, so I ordered haggis... I know I got sick from the haggis, cause I had nothing else to eat there. When I got back to my 2 star hotel room, let's just say I had the worst thirty minutes of my life... ever hear of "spin art"? Maybe it was a diseased goat, or maybe the scrapple just wasn't fresh... While in Thailand, I am now very cautious about ordering Scottish dishes. Especially haggis."

The Apex evening buffet in Pattaya.

I selected what looked like a chicken dish from the Thai section of the buffet. Upon eating it, I discovered it was in fact fish.

I didn't particularly enjoy the taste of it but ate it just the same.

I was very crook for at least the following four days. ("Very crook" means a maximum distance from the John of 3 metres. )

My warning is, be wary of buffet food as it can be anticipated that left over food will be re-heated and offered for human consumption on the following night.

Could someone please advise where the Apex Buffet is located, in general terms?

And I would be curious to know if the listed places are air conditioned or not air conditioned, to try to get an idea if there is any corrolation between NON air conditioned places and the 3 meter from the toilet rule.

In "general terms" I would guess that the best way of describing the location of the Apex buffet is "in the Apex hotel"

I have a stomach lined with steel - but after eating the Seared Scallop special (imported from the US) at Cherry's (on 2nd Road) I was on the floor hugging the toilet bowl for 6 hours. I'm sure this can happen anywhere, but next time I will think twice before eating any seafood that has been frozen before they are served and NOT cooked thru.

In my never ending search for perfection, here is my field report on food poisoning.

Last March, I went with a prostitute that I just picked up on Walking Street, and we went to the fully air conditioned Tequila Reef Restaurant...we each ordered different things. She ordered some pasta and was fine...I was feeling for Mexican food, so I ordered the Chili Burrito...I know I got sick from the Burrito, cause I had nothing else to eat there or the entire day before I ate at Tequila Reef. When I got back to my small bungalow, let's just say I had the worst six hours of my life....ever hear of "spin art"? Maybe it was a diseased buffalo or the soft corn tortilla just wasn't fresh....While in Thailand, I am now very cautious about ordering Mexican dishes. Especially Chili Burritos.

I welcome critiques on my writing style. :o

Have had food poisoning a couple of times and overnighted in hospital - expensive at 25,000 baht a go! Many years ago ate cream things at that tower place - revolving restaurant if I remember right. Then last year couldn't resist one of those trifle things with cream at Starbucks. Best to stay clear of all cream and mayo. And, for me, chillis - had non-stop diarrhoea until my driver told me to desist.

First, I would like to comment on your excellent writing style... truly well done! In the future, it's not necessary to have to go all the way to Walking Street to find women of "that category"... hookers are also available on 3rd Road, as well as Second Road. And I'm amazed that you referenced "spin art", just like I did! We must have something in common. For the record, I was at Mike's Mexican Restaurant, Cantina and "Good Time" Supper Club last night, on Teppraya Road... had two beef tacos... delicious, and no "spin art" effect. Friendly service too. It's right across from the Seven Oaks Inn, (I didn't see any oaks there though).

"Number One Food and Drink" opposite Jomtien Complex and Miss Pattaya Bar. Twice on two separate occasions.

Am I a sucker for punishment or what?

Best pal in the industry points his fingers at mayo every time. Hot climate, mayo left out, whamo.

I totally concur with that. The mayonaisey stuff should also be avoided cause it's simply not healthy, and in my mind, doesn't even taste good.

And cross-contamination, by infected people handling ladels, then rubbing their eyes, nose, scratching, open sores, crotch, etc., then touching another ladel... It would be best to bring some disposible thin plastic gloves to a buffet/salad bar situation.

Tourists warned of bacteria contamination at food shops

BANGKOK: -- Coliform bacteria have contaminated utensils at many food shops around tourist attractions, according to the Health Department.

"The contamination can cause diarrhoea and food poisoning," the department's academic Anocha Charoenpornkijwattana said Sunday.

According to her, the information came from the Health Department's study on hygienic standards at 12 attractions across the country. As more than half of food shops in these attractions have participated in the department's Clean Food Good Taste project, the study focused on the non-participating food shops only.

"We have detected coliform-bacteria contamination on their plates, ice tongs, cooks' hands and waiters' hands," Anocha said.

A joke? Well, what's funnier:

1. plastic gloves at a buffet/salad bar

or...

2. a week and 40,000 baht in the hospital, the worst 30 minutes of your life, "Spin art", cramps, fever, etc?

Be sure to read the current headline article on TV's home page about FOOD POISIONING here...

Oh, and remember to wash your hands frequently... and when exiting a restroom door, DON'T touch that filthy doorknob with your just cleaned hands... grab a towel, toilet paper, or even your sleeve or shirt, and use THAT to open the door... or you can do what I do, which is wait for someone else to come in or out, and "piggy back" out the bathroom door with them... DON'T TOUCH THAT DOOR KNOB!

Who is to wear the plastic gloves?

I have friends who eat from Sizzlers salad bar all the time and have no problems. I never eat from salad bars. The only buffet I eat is at White Knight.

Actually the most contaminated place anywhere is the sink in (or outside) the toilet.

I don't call it "food poisoning", I leave that term for the drama queens.

Only place I ever got a dose of the squits was Fawlty Towers on soi 7 from liver and bacon with gravy, mashed tatties and peas - bluddy delicious it was too. It was a one off as I ate there many times in it's old location just off soi 7 and it's current one assuming it's still there.

I avoid buffet food like the salad bars at sh1teholes like Sizzlers because you just don't know how long the food has been out let alone how it was prepared besides which the food in such places is mass produced guano unfit for human consumption.

When I am in Thailand 90% of the time I eat Thai food prepared by Thais and predominantly served to Thais. Quite why anyone travels to any country and then studiously avoids the local cuisine is totally beyond my comprehension. But then some people do have such utterly delicate constitutions that prevent them from living life.

Don't recall ever getting food poisoning from any place I've eaten. I go to a variety of places from farang restaurants to food stalls/vendors on the street.

I have ended up on a few occasions being chained to the hong nam though, but upon reflection I think it had to do more with the steady liquid diet for 12+ hours (too much drinking, not enough eating. What do you expect to happen if all you ingest is liquids ?) :o

As for Weho's suggestion about wearing plastic (disposable) gloves and not touching knobs, he (?) is correct that it would dramatically cut down your chances of catching something like gastroenteritis (infectious diarrhea). There was a medical study out years ago that suggested that most people catch things like the cold and flu, through contact with the hands (shaking hands, touching door knobs ect).

Not really practical to carry around a bunch of disposable gloves everywhere you go though. Not to mention what the people around you would think. :D

Maybe they don't like it.

I'm not crazy about Thai food, but I love Japanese and Vietnamese, but I don't want to live there.

I dress real butch... like a lesbian dresses. In fact, I wear the same clothes that Ellen Degeneres (new talk show on Star World channel) wears every day. Real butch... a lot of flannel shirts, bolo ties, a pickup truck, no makeup, and I uses cats to accessorize with.
