Popular Post ToyotaVigoThailand
hello, can you confirm please ? Renew license 1 day after expiration to get 6 full years ? But license still valid 1 year after expiration, so it's 6 full years anyway if we renew it 1 year late ? Is it better to renew it right after expiration date or 1 year later is perfectly ok also ? cheers
Popular Post Ralf001
Don't confuse the 12 month window allowed by the LTD after expiration for renewal to think you licence is still valid. That could be a real costly mistake and you insurance company rejects claim due to un-licenced. 4

No - I renewed my DL 10 months late last year, and the new DL was valid for 5 yrs plus a couple of months 'til my next birthday, i.e., the longstanding practise has been that renew after your birthday (i.e., the expiry date on the DL) and get 5 yrs plus the period to your next birthday, which typically equates to almost a 6 yr validity. 1 1
transam
You have one year to renew an expired licence without taking the whole driving test again, you do not get an extra year to carry on driving after expiration. You will get near 6 years on renewal if done after your birthdate, as they use birthdates on licences.. Edited May 5, 2022 by transam

No, you have to renew after your birthday to get the additional time, the licence is valid for 5 years from your next birthday. Last year when I went to renew they refused my yellow book and said I had to go to immigration. I was due to go to immigration anyway in a couple of weeks so just stopped driving after my birthday for a week or so. As said the licence is no longer valid once expired. I did however get an extra 50 weeks or so on the validity of the new licence. 1
salsajapan
What are people replying here ?! you really know nothing ?! OF COURSE THE OP IS CORRECT ! you can renew your license the day after expiration date or 364 days later, the result is the same, your license is valid 6 years ! if you renew right after your birthday you get 5 years + the year to your BD = 6 years if you renew 364 days after expiration date, you gate only 5 years, but you already got 1 year when your license was expired but still valid. Why is it so complicated for you to understand something so easy ? ah yes, I have an idea why...

Popular Post mahjongguy
"...your license was expired but still valid." It is stated clearly above that renewing within the year after expiration gets you certain privileges (e.g. no test) but it does not allow you to legally drive during that expired period. Expired means Not Valid and that means no insurance. To get that extra year, the right thing to do is to stop driving on that final day (your birthday) and then have someone drive you to Land Transport on the next convenient day. Why not reading first AT LEAST ? ALL DRIVING LICENCES ARE VALID 1 FULL YEAR AFTER EXPIRATION DATE ! understand ? or do I need to repeat ?! why it's never possible for anybody on this forum to post something correct or to shutitup when you know nothing ?! I think you should be a little more careful before coming up with advice like that. It is true that during the period when DLT were not issuing licenses due to Covid closure, there was a concession and was ONLY a concession, that holders of licenses that had expired may continue to drive and that insurance policies would still be valid. But those days are past now, it's business as usual at DLT and the concession has been withdrawn. Once a license has expired it would be illegal drive until it is renewed. The O/Ps notion that if you renew your license after it expires, you will gain the balance of the days between renewal and your next birthday is true, so yes you can gain almost 1 year. (I've done it myself recently) But until the license is renewed, it is NOT VALID for use on the road. There's a useful article on the topic here.
