Unless they're working on a time-machine (Chula TimeTraveler 3000?)  too, it seems like more of a learning experience, in preparation for future viruses/diseases which can be treated with mRNA technology.

A good learning exercise for the students.  They'll have to await the next pandemic, and surely there will be many, as a very profitable exercise.

That's the same in Australia. The govt is funding an mRNA factory here. The usual low information pundits say too little to late but it's about future viruses. mRNA technology has some promise of producing a universal vaccination.
