Why do Thais burn leaves and branches?

Smoke is fine as long as it's organic and not plastic or rubber, or insane amounts of smoke like when Thais burn down very large felled trees.

 

My windows are all boarded up because of this.

Don't you know that the tired old jibe about Brits and warm beer is decades out of date. Very few under 50 have ever drunk anything not ice cold and gassy.

Why do Churches burn incense?   worst thing for the Universe known to man!!!!   

 

It wasn't that many decades ago when all Mom and Pops had chimneys going nuts....

 

We are simply living 50 years behind.  Which is why we are here!!!!!

Do Thai households burn leaves simply to keep their gardens looking clean and leafless? I'm trying to understand the logic behind it.

 

my old man used to burn the leaves and fallen branches every couple of weeks. the stink was awful and mum used to go off at him big time. but the council didn't have a green waste collection service at the time, you had to go to the tip yourself and pay money to dump your cr@p and the old man wasn't having a bar of that. 

 

composting was too much work I guess, plus he seemed to take great pleasure in watching the piles of cr@p burning with a glass of red wine in one hand and a ciggy in the other. maybe it's the same here? ????

More like 200 to 300 baht in Western restaurants, and the portions often aren't that big either.

We have trees and nice gardens and thus leaf raking is an every day thing... the leaves would be knee deep if we didn't - they are carried to a corner of the property and burned or there would be no place to put tomorrow's leaves... we have no nearby neighbors.
