He stated that the police care about road safety and enforcement.

If that was so they would be nicking drivers while on road patrol.

A fake award by a fake government. Research my ""@ss...Roadside checks DON"T work and NEVER have, Road Patrols DO work as proved in real countries that have little or no corruption. Where do I claim my Award and Medal ?

Sometime ignoring up to 70 tickets, suggested Siam Rath.

He intended to weed out these individuals for the benefit of all good drivers on the roads.

When I was around 20 in the UK i ignored a ticket for a bald tyre, and then a court summons to go to court, the cops came to my house, took me to the police station where i was made to pay it, or else further action would be taken, i'm talking some 50yrs ago !

I'd like to ask  the Highway Police chief to inform his staff   that it is not possible  to do  U turn on Sukhumvit rd...  from the  nearside (left lane), one has postion them selves in the outside  right hand lane...

I was travelling at 06.30  on  very quiet Sukhumvit rd  in the outside lane, because   150 yards ahead of me i want to do a u turn, but  a Policeman  standing on the hard shoulder  ran to the center of the road to pull me over  to tell me i shouldnt be driving in the outsoide lane, telling him of  my intentions ( he can see my indicator flashing)  was no good   he wanted to issue me with an on the spot ticket until i said i will take the ticket to the police station  to pay, i was then told i can go  (without the ticket) ..

The only time I ever see the Highway police out on the road. is when they are escorting busloads of politicians?, or with the help of the local police, clearing traffic off the road for 20km or more so that a VVVIP can be driven down the highway.

They seem to be utterly useless to the general population, and do not provide anything in the way of traffic safety, nor a deterrent.

Thai police are completely untrained in dealing with road safety. They don't even have a proper rod safe section. Accidents are not measured and analysed, they have no proper system for enforcing road laws and most officers do this part time without any knowledge of the laws in the first place. They have steadfastly recited international science-based advice for 3 decades.  See no reason to award anyone in the police on the basis of road safety.

I'm always for maximum possible individual freedom, but driving a car is where the fun stops. No car and/or motorcycle license without at least 20 hours driving lessons with a driving instructor. Many drivers here do not even know the simplest traffic rules.

Perhaps after completing the lessons as you suggest, a proper driving test should be taken on the open road.

Not the farce that occurs now driving around the DLT compound.

I really do believe Thailand has more chance of planting the Thai flag on the moon ...............LOL

Although there are no trees or lamp posts on the moon, the Thai moon lander vehicle still should be beware of the deep craters, canyons and crevices!

Road safety research is the proper business of independent academic civilian institutes .

Certainly NOT Police Work. Police are unqualified and with vested interest in reducing already doctored / reduced figures and whose inaction is no doubt indirectly responsible for thousands of road deaths here.

Then to compound this ethical conflict of interest violation, by silly “awards” to Police, the usual realm of risible, ridiculous & disgraceful is entered.

Rotten Thai Culture, Corruption & Hypocrisy at its Finest ….again.

Driving Schools all part of the same superficial “road safety” corruption system. Can even a blind paraplegic actually Fail to get a Driving License here ?

Just the single usual reason here: Culture.

So true. If they would drive at least 100 Km/h then. On the highways, it's mostly the totally overloaded pickup trucks that permanently block the right lane. Or the regional farmers with their ancient cars that are incapable of driving  which, at 70 km/h, sometimes put themselves in the fast lane kilometers before the planned U-turn. The whole thing then at night without rear light illumination.

Always turn those pesky rear end lights out, bike or car. Ghosts.

There can not be another nation on earth where the top man gets an award for allowing absolute disregard to road safety and next to zero law enforcement by his own teams resulting in 10's of 1000s of unnecessary deaths.

Possibly Zimbabwe but on a smaller scale (per capita must be a question?)

Just doesn't get reported.

When was the last time anybody heard from Zimbabwe?

Yes, I drove there early '90's.

The chief of the Highway police was basking in the praise after receiving the top prize at a Thailand Road Safety seminar.

He gets a prize for extracting the most money from motorists?

It beggars belief that anyone would stand up and proudly take an award related to road safety when the record for this country is truly abysmal.  And what do they focus on? The money - people not paying fines. Yes that will save lives for sure. Dismal. pathetic.
