Thailand has by far the greatest number of guns in circulation compared to any other country in ASEAN, 50 times more than Singapore and over three times more than the nearest country, Cambodia. However, while gun deaths exceed the United States by 30% they are far behind the rate seen in the Philippines. The combination of Thailand’s chronic problems of gun violence, mental health issues and drug abuse results in a deadly cocktail that produces nights of carnage and human misery such as that seen on Saturday in two provinces near Bangkok.

 

On Saturday night, police in Thailand were called to the scenes of two senseless shootings where three people lost their lives. The first, in Pathum Thani, central Thailand, neighbouring Bangkok, was the scene of a youth gang ambush where an unidentified 16-year-old boy’s body was found while the other, three hours later, in Chonburi, involved a hallucinating and intoxicated 38-year-old man who indiscriminately gunned down three middle-aged men after one had asked him for a bottle of beer. Just another day in Thailand which is suffering under the weight of twin chronic problems, drug abuse and gun violence.

Seems every other story on this forum is gun related now - thank heavens assault rifles are not widely available, as there would be a massacre every day

Who to believe and what good are stats on any sites ?

On a couple 'stat' sites, I don't even find Thailand listed.  Or some other ASEAN countries.  Guessing that 30% more per capita (100k), rather than simply total number, as that would really be high.

Sitting here with my morning's coffee reading this.. what a start of a day and what the rest of the day will bring upon us, words fails me....

So comparing guns/gun violence in Thailand with a population of 80 million people, to America with a population of 380 million people makes sense?  Brilliant!

He had a choice just to say NO , when asked for beer,

but took the alternative and just shot them, maybe more

RIP to that poor lad, but why is the report saying 'the remains' of a person who received one gunshot wound to his chest? Surely the 'remains' would suggest his body had been broken into more than one part or had started to decompose. Can't they just use the word 'body'?

Surely, that's per capita, and they usually use per 100k with such comparisons.  And Thailand has less that 67 million people, on latest count. 

 

USA # may be correct, and nobody knows how many illegal immigrants there are, but most put USA population @ 335 ish million.

I just peeked at wiki, and 2017 stats stated < 1800, (2.6 per 100k) and sourced from UN, (big surprise they are wrong ????).  So very inaccurate, unless we are expected to believe, the number drop about 35% from 2016.

 

2016 #s attributed to:  "In 2016, there were more than 3,000 homicides by a firearm in the country - a rate of 4.45 deaths per 100,000 people, according to research by the University of Washington."

Which conflicts with other sources, so safe to say ... Nobody has a clue how many, worldwide, when reading stats.

 

I was peeking at FBI murder stats for USA, and steady 4 year decline 2016-19, with 10,268 for 2019.   Then saw almost 21k recently quoted for 2020, UN stats, again on Wiki.  So we are supposed to believe the murders in USA doubled in 1 years, after 4 consecutive drops.

 

With so many murders, worldwide, with firearms & everything else, it's still mind boggling, IMHO, that some people think, you shouldn't have the right to protect yourself, with your own firearm, IF wanting, and IF trained properly.  At least be on a level playing field.  May never need, but nice to have the option if you did.

 

In reality, Police are not there to protect you or prevent crime, simply take the report of your untimely death. IMHO.

Comparisons like that are always per capita. That said, it still seems unlikely.

"Remains" generally implies body parts, such as a partial recovery of a whole corpse , but this article describes a deceased male with a single entry wound (bullet).  

The comparison to the gun related homicides/violence in the US should have mentioned "per capita" as that would seem to make sense considering the population differences.

It seems that those countries have a gun problem. But no solution for it. Fortunately, few mass shootings in schools.

Maybe that's why the article said that there are 50 times more guns in Thailand than Singapore!  Very few in Singapore and more than a few here!
