Deadly combination: Durian and beer puts woman in hospital; following death of soldier Chula doc issues warning

It is a common warning that most Thais are aware of - whatever you do don't mix durian with alcohol.

Some think it's an old wives' tale but a top university doctor has confirmed it is true.

Sanook reported on a series of posts on TikTok about a woman who went into shock and had to be taken by ambulance to hospital.

In a video she was semi-conscious, with her eyes rolling in her head and her boyfriend blowing in her mouth in a desperate attempt to keep her awake.

She had had three segments of what is known as the King of Fruits and was into her second beer when she started feeling hot with chest pains.

She described difficulty breathing as if there was someting stuck in her throat.

"Don't believe those who boast about drinking beer with durian," she warned.

She has recovered now and posted that she had eaten the durian three hours before the beer and "forgot herself".

Meanwhile Sanook reported that a military man in Lampang had died in similar circumstances at the beginning of May prompting Dr Jetsada Denduangboriphan, a scientist at Chulalongkorn University to say: "Don't eat Durian with beer - it's true".

He had expressed his condolences and then explained the science behind it.

Due to the makeup of otherwise safe substances in durian they can react with alcohol to produce acetaldehyde.

Enzymes then react further with this to produce acetate that aids in the body's production of carbon dioxide.

Normally the body has mechanisms to deal with harmful parts of alcoholic beverages but the consumption of durian inhibits this.

You have been warned.

The durian alone would be enough to do me in. Can’t stand it with or without alcohol.

Why spoil a perfecty good beer?

I've heard this for years but never seen it. Only durian. Durian is not on my list of favorite foods

Love durian. This was one of the first things Thais warned me about. Yet I have seen Thai throwing up after getting drunk first then eating durian. I guess when people are drunk they do stupid things.

I never touch durian.. problem solved.

Can't stand the smell it gives off like a deposit outside 7-11 by an ill-mannered Soi dog.

Does it sleep outside?

It probably will have that effect yes.

I have ate durian and drank at the same time.  No problem.  Other than durian makes me burp with durian taste for hours afterwards whether drinking or not.

Every nation has its eccentricities. Durian and beer, sounds ghastly. The Brits with cold pork pies and warm beer. Americans drink beer that looks like water with a head of foam on it, and pork ribs that are more fat than meat..

I've never heard of Australians poisoning themselves with Vegemite and beer, that's because we know the Vitamin B added to Vegemite counteracts alcohol-induced vitamin deficiency.

Personally, I quite like beer.

Nothing to do with the jab?

I love both durian and beer.I eat durian for breakfast so that it is out of my system by the time the happy hour comes around. While small amounts of durian are okay to eat with alcohol ,a whole 3 or 4 kg durian makes you feel bloated, and alcohol just doesn't taste good.

No offense but I'd like a second confirmation, a top university doctor from a western country.

I must admit I limit my durian intake having had symptoms like this.

Beer isn't that bad, an exaggeration in my opinion. Sometimes for sure, but certainly not always. ????

I reckon it's all too much, it's hocus pokus, mumbo jumbo stuff.

It was not that long ago a bus driver was found dead in his bus because he had been drinking whiskey and eating LomYai.

Durian, LomYai it's a fruit and us Aussies don't eat fruit when drinking alcohol, there you go learn from the Aussies, EAT FRUIT RESPONSIBLY.

Anyway, I got to go, I'm running late to see my witch doctor.

My goodness, Anutin is becoming very lax. Surely we need another nationwide lockdown with accompanying alcohol ban to remedy this grave situation? Oh, and better add a durian ban as well for good measure!

Here is a link to a pdf from a government agency.  It does not specify which fruits, only says ripe fruits, cheese and heated milk.  It does provide some additional information.

I've enjoyed eating durian for thirty years, I also enjoy beer. On the occasions the two coincide I've never had a problem. I was given the health warning in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia but have seen no scientific evidence to back it up. Certainly my own personal experience doesn't support the dire health warning.

So it was not a case of having durian and beer at the same time, like you might have a bag of crisps or peanuts with your pint. Three hours is a long time gap before having the alcohol I would have thought. Watermelon takes about 30 minutes to digest, while other fruit like bananas and oranges take about 1 hour.
