onthedarkside
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Safer Communities Act was the first major gun safety legislation to be passed since the Brady Bill in 1994 The Senate passed a bipartisan gun bill late Thursday night in a 65-33 vote. The bill, spearheaded by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, comes in the wake of several recent mass shootings. The mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and two teachers dead, was the major driver behind the bipartisan effort. ... The bill would provide funding for states to create programs that could keep weapons away from people who are a danger to themselves or others, often called red flag laws. It would also enhance background checks for gun buyers under 21, add penalties for some gun criminals and provide funding for a variety of health and mental health-related programs. It also addresses closing the so-called "boyfriend loophole," which is a gap in federal law that means spousal domestic abusers can have gun rights taken away but not unmarried ones. bendejo
Well well! https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/24/politics/house-vote-bipartisan-safer-communities-act/index.html Lawmakers then raced to pass the bill before they left Washington for the July Fourth recess. Democrats in Congress doing things with GOP-like efficiency? Has hell frozen over?
Tropposurfer
Another piece of sickening theatre. Empty. It does nothing, nothing to address the rampant ghost-guns, the assault rifles -weapons designed for warfare and maximum lethality in the shortest space of time, nothing to enforce nationwide checks and national mandatory waiting periods of any significance, no national register of flagged individuals, nothing to stop 'open/unfettered carry' (which has just been codified into law in NY state), nothing to combat the cross state border trafficking of guns - which contributes to thousands of gun deaths annually, nothing to combat the insane individual states legislations that allow purchasing of all manner weapons with little and in some cases ZERO checks or even ID to buy as many guns and ammo as one wishes, and the list of deceitful legislative theatre and impotence goes on ... A lame piece of legislation does little or nothing to resolve these pressing issues. To be expected from this body of <deleted>.
