But in that case, Stocks & Shares should be allowed as A lot of these settle on a T+1 basis (All US / Canadian Stocks) same as MMFs and where they don't (e.g. UK/EU) they're moving to T+1 (11th October 2027 at the latest).

Yes but then comes the volatility issue.

The point of the LTR visa health insurance requirement is that the individual is expressly covered and not become a charge for Thailand or people being let without care in case of health issue.

How can an individual be covered if the funds, in case of the bank deposit option, need up to few days to be transferred and readily available in Thailand? Again TIT.

That could be true of any funds held overseas, depending how the particular financial institution operates. For that matter, insurance companies could take several days to approve or pay out medical coverage amounts - and might refuse to pay for anything. There are no sure things.

They could protect against that by just requiring a multiplier if funds are in liquid securities rather than cash - say, $500k (or even $1M) in brokerage assets as a substitute for the $100k in cash. Any widely traded security can be turned into cash virtually overnight in the US, and I'm sure a body called the "Board of Investment" understands that.

But as you say - TIT 🤷

Having a substantial credit card limit and checking account balance would be used in most cases to settle the hospital bill with the card balance paid before due date after the MM fund sale settles.

Probably most of us have passports of ten year duration -- meaning, it will expire before your ten year LTR visa expires. So, when you get a new passport, you have to transfer your LTR visa stamps over to it. And you can't do that at your local Imm office -- you have to go to BoI in Bangkok, and its colocated Imm office. BUT, you don't have to do this in person -- you can hire an agent (I just confirmed this with BoI).

And for those of us who live a long ways from Bangkok, this could save some wear and tear on an eighty year old body. Yes, we still have to go in person for the five year update (and ten year renewal). But it's nice we don't have to do this for stamp transfers.

Anyway, maybe this is not new news for LTR visa holders. But for one -- me -- it was. And here in Chiang Mai, Star Visa is the agent that will do this.

Ah nice I can avoid this...got it while in the USA and have a letter ;)

I made a point of renewing my U.S. passport in anticipation of applying for a LTR-WP visa. I had my application ready awaiting the arrival of my new passport for copying and filling in the Passport Number where called for and then transferred my O retirement visa stamps to my new passport.

As it turns out my passport expires on September 1, 2032 and my ten-years is up on October 16, 2032 (issued October 31, 2022). By renewing my passport and applying for another ten-year visa I should be able to avoid either two trips or a long trip to Bangkok (if I am still alive and living here at 84-years old).

One of the other things I have done is to have the Embassy notarize my PoA granting my wife the power to assist with BoI paperwork. I submitted a copy of the PoA to BoI and have her complete my one-year reports at our local immigration office.

By the way, I recently realized what a benefit it is to have my passive income already in dollars avoiding currency fluctuations that could lead to needing come up with a 40,000 Dollar investment in Thailand.

Good luck with your renewal. I recently asked BOI if I could use my retiree Aetna medical coverage instead of the Thai AXA policy that I currently have, and BOI said no. My Aetna policy covers me overseas. BOI didn't even review the Aetna docs I sent them. So, I decided to use the $100k in bank method for my 5-year renewal. BOI said to make sure I have 12 mths history in bank.

I may have the same Aetna medical coverage as yours. I submitted an insurance verification letter where it stated that there is no dollar limit on the policy. In addition, I submitted a cover letter explaining that my retiree medical insurance policy is similar to Tricare. BOI accepted this letter and they approved my LTR visa.

I hope I wasn't approved in error. I will submit the same paperwork on the 5-year visa update. If not approved I will have $100k in a money market account ready by then.

I suspect the 'cover letter' was the trick. I read of a user who managed to Cigna (with the Cigna Global insurance coverage) to sign such a cover letter and that is my plan for my 5 year re-proof of finances ( i too have Cigna Global Insurance coverage). [I went the $100k self insurance for my 1st five years].

Its good to be prepared. I don't suppose Aetna will sign such a cover letter?

Congrats on being approved for your LTR visa, and with your Aetna coverage being accepted. I think the problem for me was trying to change to my Aetna coverage after my LTR was approved based on a Thai policy. BOI didn't want to consider my request to change coverages. BOI did approve me changing to the $100k method. I will submit my Aetna medical coverage at the 5-year renewal.

My wife is joining the Thai civil service, so I'll be under her health cover cover as well. I am wondering whether using this for my 5 years verification might be easier than justifying the [great] UN group plan I am using for my healthcare.

To be honest, from the grapevine, I get the impression, that with years passing and sharing with TI, BOI disregards substance to shift to more rigid formality, just as any Thai administration.

My [great] UN healthcare group plan was accepted without any questions.

BOI is likely have quite some retired UN staff under their wings, so they are well aware of UNSMIS and UN Joint Staff Pension Fund.

You can always submit both medical insurance plans, no harm.

Let's hope you're right... But even the "progressive" People Party wants to toughen the long term visas selection process. Seems the Thai people don't want foreigners and the rule of demagogy obliges..

Boi told me starting this year, they can accept money market fund in your brokerage account for 100k insurance besides the cash in your savings bank account . This is good news

Since they are the Board of Investment, I would think they would accept MMF knowing many investors keep money there for their cash position and they often provide a higher yield than even the best HYSA... and just as liquid as cash (can have cash by the end of the day and SWIFT transferred within a few hours).
If it's true that they opened that method for the $100k, it will allow more people to get approved.

I believe the other change being mooted is that the MMF can be held in an investment account. If you are talking about a MMF held at a bank your timeline sounds feasible,

But in my situation at JPMorganChase I find that there is a bit longer to withdraw from my brokerage account as the position must be sold during trading hours on a trading day and the proceeds then need to be transferred into my checking account that handles the wire at no cost.

Should it be held in a retirement account assume that there will be upfront paperwork before the order even gets placed to comply with the U.S. government's regulations to protect retirement savings.

I'm not sure retirement accts are acceptable to BOI for the $100k requirement. I may email BOI just to ask.

My Fidelity brokerage & retirement accts all have SPAXX (MMF) as their default. When I request a transfer to my Chase Bank accts, Fidelity sells SPAXX automatically, and makes the transfer that day. The money shows up in my Chase acct that same day. That's different than JPMC where one has to sell the MMF first, and then make the transfer. I have a brokerage acct with JPMC also, but I don't keep any cash in it. The reason I opened it was to qualify for the Private Client level to get the free SWIFT international wire transfers.

Quetion on LTR Visa for Work from thailand professional :

In the near future looking to apply to the LTR the only question which I cant find the answer to is the 80,000USD required, is this gross taxable employment remuneration or base salary? As i have read that if it matches the total compensation with letter from HR and the P60 for the last 3 years its fine? As example you can have a base salary for 75,000USD but then you get operational overtime or oncall or shift allowance that takes you to 100,000USD, would this be taken into consideration by the BOI especially if during the last 5 years the total compensation on p60 would be above 100,000USD?

I provided tax returns, which show my gross annual income. I didn't even provide anything from my job that stated my salary.
