Forget the law. Forget the bickering. Where I come from I was taught to do this. If you hit someone with your car, you get out and try to help them. If they appear unconscious you try to revive. At the same time, you cause as much noise and try to attract help so that someone will call an ambulance and police. You keep your mouth shut about what happened, and wait for the police and call a lawyer.

he did wrong to leave the scene, for sure, but it's not as if he had the accident, thought 'bugger, i've messed up here' and then scarpered as some posters are suggesting.

I don't know about you blokes, but I'll admit to just about dropping off behind the wheel on a 8 hour drive down in OZ. It was only for one second, but that is all it can take.

I was fortunate though that it was on a major relatively empty highway between Melbourne and Canberra. First thing I did was pull over and kipped for 20 mins.

The account of the actor in today's BP does not indicate a cowardly, drunken, irresponsible man at all, btw. Just a careless split-second mistake and that's all it takes, unfortunately. Sad.

Actor kills garbage collector in car crash

A garbage collector was killed late Wednesday when a famous actor Sornram Theppitak in his BMW collided against her in Bangkok. Mr Sornram reportedly hit the 59-year-old woman at 11pm near a telephone booth in Lao Prao district. Direk Photichai, a security guard at Sri Thani condominium locating near the scene, said he heard a loud noise at the entrance of the condominium so he ran to the scene. He said he saw Mr Sornram opened the door of his black BMW 525i and found the body of Pitploen Takoanma in blood. He said Mr Sornram told him that he dozed off.

He sticks out in my memory as the guy who scandalously evaded his mandatory military conscription duties required of all young Thai men. Seems he still hasn't learned responsibility yet.... how unfortunate it cost someone their life this time around.

Actually new him personally, have not met him in years, but he was one of the most down to earth, pleasant Thai men I have ever met........

Through my own experience, I can say that Sonram is the kinda guy who is gonna feel really really bad for this incident and will do his upmost to compensate for the tragedy.

I fully concur with your posting Stevesuphan. After an evening at a Restaurant I owned in BKK(1996), one of Sonram's friends put a large dent (with his fist) in my cars fender parked in front of the shop. Sonram was so offended by the behaviour of one the his group he returned in person the next morning and gave me 15,000 baht cash to have the dent removed. No questions ask and completely humble with what happened, it was not in anyway his responsibility.. truely amazing...

Actor Sornram Thepitak was charged with reckless driving causing death yesterday after he ran down a woman on a pavement on Wednesday. Metropolitan police chief Adisorn Nonsi said Chokchai police charged the actor with reckless driving causing death, damaging property and fleeing the scene of an accident.

I was fortunate though that it was on a major relatively empty highway between Melbourne and Canberra. First thing I did was pull over and kipped for 20 mins.

What!!! That is ridiculous! How can you fall asleep behind the wheel on a 8 hour drive. How can you choose to drive when you are sleepy? People who drive when they are sleepy should get a big knock on the head at least!

The thing was, I wasn't tired when I started the drive, and was only about 2 hours into the drive, which started mid morning. It was on a drive that I did at the time, reasonably often. I had caught myself just as my eyes drooped for a sec, and then pulled over.

My point is, that it sometimes happens.

I have learned to read silently, so in fact, I don't hear any sounds at all as I read other people's posts. Perhaps you are hearing your own voice as you read out each post, and that is why it sounds like it involves sailing up the Chao Phraya on a banana boat?

Incidentally, there is so much weed coming down the Chao Phraya at this time of year with most inclement weather. Therefore I assume by sailing, you mean motoring, and therefore sound of your reading involves a lot of grating and grinding sounds? Makes sense why this would sound like a large motor vessel delivering bananas; the trip back down the river is probably even more appropriate, being that empty vessels tend to make the most noise.

Good luck with that reading; it is a real treat learning how to read without even having to mouth the words on the way through :-) You'll get there one day mate

I will have to bow out of that. I looked after my ex girlfriend's rabbit and it died.

I like Sonram and Nui, his girlfriend. Always seemed like two of the more genuine people in a very fake industry.

That was a very sad story. I would like to know what happened to the cop, but I suspect we all know the answer to that one.

OK, I've never heard of this guy before reading this thread, but 2 things strike me:

If he was on medication & hadn't slept for a while, why not grab a taxi instead of driving himself?

For all you "Poor man, he's so nice, it was just a mistake, haven't you ever made a mistake?" proponents: Would you still be spouting that cr@p if it were YOUR wife or child he'd killed? Maybe I'm over emotional, but if ANYONE, famous or not, Thai, farang or Martian killed my child (I don't have a spouse) whilst driving after having had no sleep & on medication, I would want to kill them. If that makes me a bad person, sue me.

In both instances, when more people stopped, mainly to gawk, I could sense anger building towards me, and was in fact confronted with it. It was clear the crowd thought that I had caused the accident. Luckily, in one case the injured girl was conscious and disabused then of their assumption, They seemed disappointed. In the other I waited for the police and they could see the skid maeks of the offending vehicle (5 wheel) which clearly were not mine. They too seemed disappointed.

Thais I know (responsible professionals), say get the hel_l away if you're ever involved in an accident. I have argued how wrong that idea is, but they know more about it than me. I hope I never have to experience anything like that firsthand.

lannarebirth, I have read your posts and respect you and your integrity. Coming from a credible source as yourself, I consider this quite sobering, and a warning to us all perhaps. Any further comments on the reason why you were viewed as the culprit? Was it as simple as your being Farang? Sounds cliche and many of us rail against this view daily on this forum.

Yes, I think that was part of it, but had my Thai been better I might have cooled out that line of thinking. Just as people I respect tell me you never want to stick aroud the scene of an accident (I just wouldn't be able to do this if some lay injured), my gf say never stop if you're first to an accident, as it may be a robbery attempt. I guess we don't know what we would do until confronted with the situation. If we live our lives with good intentions hopefully we will choose the right course of action.

It is everyday life to misjudge situations. Have you ever sped while driving. Have you ever driven when you were sleepy? Have you ever broken any petty laws? What if your mistakes has killed someone?

One point also: Not everyone has the same education to each other. A farang having been educated in the west might be very much aware of not driving when on medication or in a very sleepy state. Whilst a thai living in thailand might not be so aware of how wrong this act is. He might look at it as everyday life. Very normal.

Furthermore, no one here is saying he should not be responsible for this. I think everyone here agrees that he should pay for his mistakes. It is in fact the accusations stereotyping the guy as another one of those "I can do whatever I like because I am famous" that we are trying to point out that is unfair. And people assuming things.
