Many Thais start to remove face masks in some places, online survey finds

About half of all people were not wearing masks in Central Festival in Pattaya yesterday. Most were tourists but also about a third of Thais.

My experience as well. 

I might go out on a limb to suggest that this practice is largely an upcountry thing.....with less political conscious of wearing or not associated.

It seems based on pics and videos I have seen that at least Bali is a better place in terms of mask wearing and a place to consider come next winter if this mask obsession still continues in Thailand.

Bali is okay but falls far short in attractions wrt Thailand.... 

If one is making occasional mask wearing the basis for the decision as where to go for a holiday, I would say the obsession is on your side. 

Living in Pattaya, I am not finding the need to don a mask now and again so terrible and catastrophic!

 I'm also not wearing masks anywhere I don't have to. There is currently no mandate, so live with it.

 

One office had a sign, "no mask - no entry" and I wore one at the immigration office last week.

I see Thai people (still) sitting on their own at the top of Chaloem-Phrakiat park, at 9pm at night wearing masks. The park is very quiet at that time of night. If that's not irrational fear, I don't know what is.

Indeed. More people seem to be masking outside now than before I left end June. Bizarre. Wear them outside but then go to an indoor food court with 4 friends from the office and sit cheek by jowl gabbing away and slurping noodles.

It has long been established that covid-19 does not infect people who are sitting down in restaurants. (...I jest)

All the Thai people wearing masks would have spread covid (if they had it) while they were eating. I would suggest that people who are really concerned about dying of covid stay at home for another year or so. In the meanwhile, if you are still wearning a mask in public places, I thank you for your service in keeping the environment cleaner for us non-maskers.

Really? - all this nonsense about "anti-maskers". When masks were compulsory, I wore them, now that they are not, I don't. I obey the law, not your distored idea of ethics.

A major problem with the masks is that they often end up in rivers, bottom of the ocean and elsewhere in the nature so your statement is actually counterfactual.

Not really. Masks do help to slow the spread of germs, especially when people cough and sneeze. Maybe not full protection, but it definitely helps to keep the air around me cleaner.

I've noticed a lot of people quoting medical doctors and various medical bodies about the efficacy of masks. I'm just curious, is there no such thing as an actual expert in PPE? And if there is, what is the name for such a person? And why don't we see more quotes from them? Is it because it's not a specialist field in and of itself? 
 

Doctors are disease experts, or at least to the point where they can recognize a thing and refer the patient to a specialist if needs be. But physicians often give nutritional advice, too, even though they're not qualified as nutritionists. But such advice is better coming from a nutritionist, If you see my point?
 

So, when it comes to any issues on any topic, would it not be wise to track down the real experts if they exist? By that, I mean those who actually study the said topic rather than trusting someone's word just because they're a respected "expert" in something.
