The Nigerian man infected with monkeypox, who fled to Cambodia to avoid medical treatment in Thailand, has been arrested in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

The arrest at the Doeum Thkov, Chamkarmon Market in Phnom Penh on Saturday night was reported by Khmer Times media and confirmed by Keut Chhe, deputy governor of Phnom Penh.

The man is now in the care of Cambodian health officials, according to the Khmer Times, adding that there is a large Nigerian community in Phnom Penh.

The infected Nigerian arrived in Thailand from Ethiopia at Suvarnabhumi international airport where he was granted a visa, which allowed him to stay in the country until January 18th, but he over-stayed his visa.

The photo above in which he gesticulates with two fingers, says it all as to this guys character.

Picture sums up this guy perfectly. And they wonder why Nigerians are looked down on world wide.

  • Anyway, good to know that if the Thai authorities are looking for you, it's a piece of cake (apparently) to just slip into Cambodia.

Monkeypox Escapee Held In Phnom Penh, Declared Persona Non Grata

TNR Staff

CAMBODIA confirmed that a Nigerian man infected with Monkeypox who had escaped medical treatment in Thailand was arrested last night (July 23) and he is now under the care of a medical team at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, Sanook.com said.

The head of Phnom Penh’s Chamkamon district Mr. Thein Sothom announced the arrest of the infected Nigerian man, Mr. Osmond Chihazirim Nzerem, 27, while the Cambodian Immigration Office declared him persona non grata.

There is no official confirmation by Cambodian authorities on how he crossed over to Cambodia but a big manhunt was conducted throughout Preah Sihanouk and Banteay Meanchey provinces before he was arrested in Phnom Penh.

I hope this guy wasn't in Australia, as  the fingers shown in the picture mean the same as a middle finger.

haha,  maybe..... just don't expect Nigerians to know the UK use. A single finger might be used for that.

Nothing new there. In my 3 years in Lagos I found 95% of them to be extremely racist with an attitude of superiority...

Great, someone who knows the place. Do they indeed use that 2 fingered gesture as a derogatory thing like the UK and apparently Oz?

Monkeypox was reported this year as an outbreak, in May I believe. How could he be Thailands first monkeypox case if he has been in the country since October last year on overstay? Surely he must therefore have caught the monkeypox from one of his brethren in Thailand because the timeline doesn't fit the narrative.

And I always thought he was straight!

Nothing to worry about for the Thai's

Reckon they have a good bit of,  natural immunity to this. .

Another quality tourist

As already mentioned if he was on overstay where did he get the Monkeypox from ????

Must be others walking around with it ????

According to the news, the man entered Thailand last October and overstayed his visa, living supposedly in central Phuket (Kathu district) since then.  While the monkeypox virus itself doesn't seem all that concerning, the man clearly caught the virus here so he's hardly the first case of the virus in Thailand.

Yes, that's the story. I'd say the same if I worked at the land border.

By the way, what is the penalty for having a disease that cures itself in less than a month ?

I realize you're having a laugh but the actual answer to that question is:

"On Thursday, police detected his cell phone signal in Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province and suspected that he would attempt to sneak into Cambodia through one of the natural border crossings."

Narrows down the geographic probability considerably.

There are "routes" used by these people to avoid detection. They usually have a walk through some dense forest,

cross creeks and have helpers on both sides. As you see the Cambodians got him in no time.

Yep it's <deleted> .. He Does not care about otheres health oor spreading once hes in Cambodia priison may change his attitude towards others!! however well known fact Nigerian scammers , users like Asia to apply there trade .  How did he get through immigration #Bht over stay or?
