Is going solar even possible here?

Featured Replies

I think I’m probably not alone worrying about the millions of single-use drinking water bottles or multiple plastic produce bags at groceries & markets.

“After Going Solar, I Felt the Bliss of Sidden Abundance”

I’d really like to try this. We bought our half-house 31 years ago but I still think it might be worth the investment. At 72, I might even last the seven years to pay it off.

But can it be done here? Can I produce juice to pour into EGAT’s grid in Bangkok?

Where can I buy the panels & who installs them?

And no, I don’t want a roomful of batteries!

Any pointers appreciated. This is something passive we could ALL do for the planet instead of kicking ourselves for only leaving our grandchildren a dumpster fire.

There are plenty of people on this site using solar.

Try and find bandersnatch's posts and blog.

Titled something like "Building an Eco House in Thailand."

An interesting read.

As far as not wanting a room full of batteries, if you want to go fully off grid, you will need them to overcome shortages due to cloudy days etc. Unless of course you choose the  "import from the grid" road.

The Panels you can buy online or at Global for example, but the tricky part is who installs them.

You definitely need some one local so in case there is a problem you don't have to wait days-weeks for someone to come over and fix your problem.

That ^ is my greatest struggle for going Solar as well

Edit: What is your average Electric Bill (units used) per month?

I think that stufff only good for a significant period grid collapse at the moment, though you'd soon have the neighbours come a wandering for a bit of a/c after a while....

I know and very much appreciated that.

An off-topic post attempting to derail this thread along with a reply has been removed.

If you want to start a thread discussing the viability of solar, hydro or any other alternative energy source please feel free to.

Reasoned discussion with sources cited of course.

Will Bangkok's Metropolitan Electricity Authority plug me into their grid? Or how does it work logistically & in terms of billing?

An inverter is what powers one's house, right?

Thanks!

Please read my pinned thread on inverter types, depending upon what you want to do controls the level of approval required from MEA, ranging from none to OMG how do I actually do this.

Of course, you could do what a massive number of locals do and export "illegally", nobody really cares so long as

a. You never become an overall net-exporter (get a -ve bill) and

b. The meter reader doesn't see your meter going backwards (this is assuming you still have the old disc type meter which happily run in reverse).

A couple of panels and a baby grid-tie inverter, nobody's going to care, 20kW of energy going to grid you will need some serious paperwork and approvals.

By the way, you don't need rooms full (or even any) of batteries now, this chap is a 19" rack and can hold 30kWh of energy.
