Daily News Thai Caption: Nearly stabbed too

Daily News reported on the shooting of a Ya Ba crazed man by police at a temple in NE Thailand after he threatened to stab an officer he had already attacked.

Na Yung station chief Pol Col Sakon Feuangkrasae in Udon Thani told the media yesterday that the incident started Monday when Pol Sgt Chalermphol Chaphuthorn received reports of a man trying to attack a teacher at the Ban Na Muang Thong border patrol police school.

The assailant - Ranyu "Mot" Thongnarin, 36 -  left on a motorcycle and was followed to the temple of Wat Phu Hua Ban two kilometers away.

When Mot, who was holding two 40 cm knives, saw officers outside the monks' quarters he went for Sen Sgt Maj Saden Anthapanya, 47, who was hit in the left side of the head and suffered a deep five cm long gash causing him to fall over.

The assailant then tried to stab him to inflict even worse injury.

At this point Chalermphol fired twice in the air that didn't stop the assailant.

So Chalermphol fired directly at the chest of the assailant killing him instantly.

Bunreuang Khun-in, 65, said that Mot was a rubber farmer who had disputes with relatives and was residing at the temple.

The injured officer is recovering in Na Yung hospital where he was given 11 stitches for the head wound.

The aunty of the shot man said that he was a hothead who got into drink and drugs after his wife from Myanmar left him to become a nun in her home country.

The couple have an 8 year old son.

She said that drugs took over his life after the split.
