living aboard in the islands

Featured Replies

I have a friend who wants to live aboard a ship while traveling the islands... He wants to buy a small boat.

What are the dangers or problems related to this?

Engine, fuel leak, petrol, …

has your friend ever lived aboard a sailboat before for an extended time ?
is this solo or with “crew” ?

buy a boat. Watch the money go down the drain for the continual maintenance and refit.

Boat ownership requires high maintenance costs. Hopefully your friend is very affuent. Security would be my primary concern. What happens to the boat when he wants to spend time on land? He would likely have to use a marina part time and they are an extreme lack of marinas here, except in Phuket.

this is more what I was looking for - things specific to Thailand... if you can elaborate on any of this I will pass the info along to him..

one of my concerns was pirates... but permits? how much?

If he can afford this type of boat i don't know why he wouldn't just go to islands and stay in nice hotels for his travels, way less hassle.

But each to his own...

yes ... I'd be very worried about one's own security & safety ....  more and more yacht going folks are getting robbed and kidnapped for ransom every year.

It would probably be quite appealing for a couple of hours but that's about it.

Can a non-resident or  foreigner buy and own  a boat in Thailand ? Just curious.

because that is not the dream... same reason he doesn't just knock on your door and ask to stay w/you...

Water mainly

I have been told stories by Thai friends whose family were commercial fisherman that pirates were an issue for them near Cambodia and Vietnam. The Straits of Malacca have always had that reputation, but I don’t have any direct information.

Why would he want to stay with me? i don't live on a boat or on an island.

Wasn't there a case where the husband was murdered on a yacht somewhere north of Phuket about five years ago? I think the wife was sleeping and some robbers boarded the boat.

He disturbed them and was killed and his body thrown overboard.

I think running costs will be going up sharply at the moment due to ongoing world crisis.

sailing in Thailand was simple and easy pre-covid 19...check on line for updates

beware of mermaids, bad clams and submarines with or without engines

some sailors get waylaid by go-go buoys

Where does he want to sail?

I don't think there will be pirates in the Bay of Thailand.

Has he been to Thailand before?

Well, I am asking so that wise folk on the subject can pass along information as to the dangers... which I can pass along to him... he is not your typical guy... fearless to the point of maybe having a death wish... you have an extra bedroom or not?

Running costs on a sailing boat would be ZERO.

no profit in Kabul and if this nutter were staying w/you, you would not need any security... except from the wife, there you might be on your own...

why don't we both sign on as shipmates?

yes of course , but you can not engage in anything commercial as a foreigner , you would have to employ a Thai Captain.    You need to register the boat with the Marine Dept. who will inspect the boat for safety and then annual inspection .
