The average statistics of suicides among Thai people have increased by 500 to 1,000 people per year in the past five years, the Department of Mental Health revealed on Thursday, September 8th.

Spokesperson Dr. Warot Chotipittayasunon stated during a mental health online panel discussion that the number of people committing suicide had increased by as high as 1,000 people per year in the past five to 10 years. About 5,000 people committed suicide in 2021 alone.

TPN notes that 2021 saw an average of eight months of extended Covid19 restrictions, quasi-lockdowns, forced business closures, mandates, and other measures that decimated many sectors of the Thai economy such as tourism, hospitality, construction, events, MICE, culture, sports, entertainment, retail, and more.

Pretty low suicide rate in this country (even though it's on the rise) ????

In Europe, France has a population roughly the size of that of Thailand and has 9000 suicides a year.

Welll. they attempt it everyday with the safety standards, low balconies, open elevator shafts, wearing flip-flops on wet roof(v)es, texting on motorbikes, racing, 4 people on a moto, worthles electrical wiring etc.

This is largely due to the "Prayuth Decimation". Not exactly bringing happiness to the people.

The highly selective economic shutdowns crushed countless families. It falls entirely upon the shoulders of the current leadership.

So sad. Reading this makes me depressed. Brings back sad memories of a friend of mine in Germany. Was always happy, exuded an infectious and enviable self-confidence and was a joy to be and have around. Then one day it was all over. I read his obituary and found out later that he was rejected by all the medical schools he applied to.

Yes, Germany too. Frightening numbers. An average of 1 every hour.

A few farmers topped themselves over the rice pledging scheme and Yingluck was pilloried and vilified constantly on here.

This government presides over an increase in suicides of 1,000 persons and nary a peep from the closet fascists on here.

Strange. ????

The Government did little to help its people imo.  The global economic outlook is utterly dismal for many years.

All these silly border closure by the government after most of the populations have got the vaccines is unnecessary.

It's just paranoia, getting Covid is not a death sentence , it becomes just a flu after getting vaccinated.

Starving for long time feels more like a death sentence than  a few days of flu.

Those who support military coups, juntas and dictatorships of course, silly.

Suicides are by people who have depression. A disease which is prevalent in every country. Some things lead people to take their lives. Poverty, bad leadership, seeing family members dying daily on the roads, a boring lifestyle (especially in the country here), lack of good therapists, most people living for themselves backstabbing their "friends" (the best of friends talk about each other behind their backs), inability to complain without consequences about leaders, that boring lifestyle leading many to use drugs, or mostly, cheap booze, which leads to more depression. All of these and more exacerbate the depression many have. Medicine is available, but many won't go the extra yard to make sure they are getting the right medicine (the therapists job is to evaluate regularly, and make changes if needed). I read somewhere where a survey was made, telling that there are millions of teenagers here with depression. How many are being evaluated, and helped with this? Depression is genetic, and I've seen, in personal experience, an ex wife and girlfriend who have clinical depression. The former did nothing, and that lead to our divorce, along with her being a narcissist (most come from neglect, or spoiling, in their formative years, by parents). The latter is on meds, and is doing better, although has an environment which is depressing in itself. Medicines can, and will help, if they're the right ones, but the best defense against depression is having support from someone who truly loves and cares for you. This isn't happening here, as it seems, like I mentioned, that there are very few that have real friends they can turn to, who won't turn around and tell others that you have depression, which is where the stigma arises, that you are "sick". Of course, suicides happen worldwide, but because of the previously mentioned problems, it happens a lot here.

There never was a dislike. Why do you need a dislike icon? If you don't like something, just ignore it and move on. There's no need for you to upset people by expressing your disapproval.

I think a thumbs down icon would be suitable .....    it's a bit like the hotel reviews,  you can't disagree with a service or room ...  your only allowed to say good things,  what's the damn point then,  how will anyone ever know what are the bad points about a place.

Same here,   so you can only like or love a comment ..  that's crazy  !
