It is rare for Thai politicians to voluntarily vacate their seats, not to mention a coveted ministerial post. But that was exactly what Deputy Interior Minister Nipon Boonyamanee did last Monday.

A senior figure from the coalition Democrat Party, Nipon resigned to face trial in the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on a charge of malfeasance.

The case stems from his role as chief executive of Songkhla’s provincial administrative organization. Back in 2013, he refused to pay 52 million baht for the PAO’s purchase of two road-maintenance trucks, arguing that bidding on the contract during his predecessor’s tenure was flawed by collusion.

Nipon, 64, said he decided to step down to avoid criticism and to concentrate on the trial.

It is a sad reflection that this is rare......

If anyone knew the history of Nipon, they would know he did not step down with the pure motives of fighting the charges.... or with any decency of wanting to do the right thing...

I would not suggest this person is at concerned about pending legal actions...."avoiding criticism" ....hoping a lot of his issues go away.

However...he's a dinosaur...he's been in a position of power and it would appear, he been caught with his hands in the till....but then, he's likely always had his hands there!

By virtue of his very being (a Thai politician) he is maybe as more corrupt than any of us can ever imagine.

Let see his personal wealth or a picture of his house(s) and then question why he is in politics with a zero or minimal salary.

This is the same guy trying to push through the Chana Indusutrial Estate, where is family were trading land in and around where it was going to go.... His response to this was nothing wrong with that....
