Please note that PRP has been shown effective for Rheumatoid Arthritis and to speed healing after joint injuries. It's efficacy for osteoarthritis is debatable with many studies showing no effect.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6383098/

The injections are painful (not possible to combine with a local anesthetic) and the treatment will be quite expensive

If the problem is osteoarthritis you would be better advised IMO to look into HA injections. But if this is for an orthopedic injury that is not healing well with standard treatment, might be worth considering

Thanks for replying Sheryl! I've been considering a combination of platelet rich plasma and hyaluronic acid injections, and as far as I've seen on the Bumrungrad Hospital website, at least they promote it. If they use it as a treatment and their experience using it is another thing! I don't know if Samitivej offers the combination, but have seen an article about PRP on their website.

As I said, the use of PRP for OA is at best experimental and many studies have failed to show benefit.

I would suggest you just get HA injection to start with rather than undergo the pain and considerab;e expense of something that may not even help.

I had a course of HA injections back in New Zealand when I had some and cartilage and bone fragments removed from my elbow, and I still wanted to play tennis, and the surgeon said at the time it was perhaps a little experimental for my condition, but it wasn't that expensive so I went ahead and had a small course of injections over a few weeks.

Well there was no pain and I was delighted with the result, so perhaps worth a try in your case?

Do you  know approximate cost for Hyaluronic acid injection at Bumrungrad  or Samitivej?

Sheryl. I found the price in this link https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/centers/joint-replacement-surgery-sport-medicine-center-bangkok-thailand

However maybe you can help me out with which one is most preferable of this two: Hyaluronic acid injection_Ostenil single short (3 sessions) or this: Hyaluronic acid injection_Hyruan ONE 1 Session

Do this mean that the "Hyruan" is preferable and only one session needed but cost a bit more?

Thanks

Ostenil and Hyruan are both HA.  Both of them  come in 2 forms: regular requiring a series of 3 shots (once a week) and single dose. This price list seems to show a regular preparation of Ostenil and the single dose preparion of Hyruan.

In terms of cost it is unclear if the price listed fo Ostenil is per injection or for the course of 3 injections (though probably the latter). It is also unclear if doctor fee is included. If it not then the single dose will be less expensive. If it is included  then  the 3 dose series is less expensive but not by very much.

I am not aware of any data showing one brand to be better than the other but a knee specialist might know more .

In terms of 3 dose vs single dose, studies I have seen indicate equal results initially but wearing off a little sooner for the single dose.

In any event you can't just make an appointment for these injections. You must first have a consultation with an ortho specialist. And it is this doctor who would administer the injection.

I suggest you consult Dr. Panya, an eminent knee specialist there. Bring your most recent xrays with you. He can advise further on pros and cons of single dose vs 3 dose series.

Thanks Sheryl. Doctor fee for the injection is listed as included so are medicine (guess that is the Hyaluronic acid) and OPD facility and service charge but not doctor consultation. Listed in the package down right in the link.

Anyway I keep asking myself if a injection with either Hyaluronic acid or PRP is for me! I mean is it for they who still are relatively activ and can do regular excercise included running or is it for they who are in so much pain that this is the last stage before knee replacement!?

HA injections can be given at any stage though benefit will be more if things have not advanced to to the point where it is just bone on bone.

The best way to get an answer specific to your situation to that is to consult a specialist. Which you will have to do anyway in order to get the injections.

Yes, I understand that I have to have a consultation with an orthopedist first and hear what he thinks. Incidentally, I found out that when it comes to PRP injections Samitivej has more reasonable prices than Bumrungrad, but so far I haven't found anything about Samitivej offering injections with Hyaluronic acid, maybe you know more about this!

I frankly doubt doctor at either Samitivej or Bumrungrad will agree to PRP fr your condition as it simply is not indicated/proven to work for that.

I am sure they do HA at Samitivej. But the very best knee doctor is at Bumrungrad,
