(FILES) This file handout photo taken on March 24, 2021 and released by the Miss Grand International beauty pageant on March 25, 2021 shows Miss Grand International contestant Han Lay taking part in the national costume part of the contest in Bangkok.

Myanmar’s former beauty queen and an anti-junta activist, Thaw Nandar Aung, aka “Han Lay”, who has been stranded in Thailand due to immigration difficulties, has finally been granted asylum in Canada.

Local and international media outlets, such as the BBC, cited sources saying  that she will be leaving Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi on September 27th, heading to Incheon first and then on to Toronto, Canada.

The 23-year-old has been stranded since September 21st, and attempts were reportedly made by Myanmar authorities to have her repatriated, but she was not forcibly sent back.

While no confirmation has been provided by the military administration in Myanmar as to whether her passport has been revoked, spokesperson General Zaw Min Tun had said that cooperation of neighbouring countries and Interpol has been requested by arresting “fugitives” with warrants issued for them.

Agree with you partly. Hat's off to a great country, which currently is being controlled by pathetic leadership. At least they did something commendable.

Good to see Canada do this, BUT it might have meant more if one of the ASEAN nations had done this first!

The collective ASEAN countries talk so much about how great they can be together (and in theory they can be), but with the various junta gov's in ASEAN they get little done.

Great news. I will greet her in person if possible and welcome her to Canada. Our prime minister is busy singing Queen covers.

Moral of the story

Amazing, proof yet again that beautiful people get treated better than fugly people. Would she have readily got asylum if she had a head like Chad Morgan?

If that's what you believe the moral of the story is I can't help thinking you haven't got the foggiest about what morality means.

Always wonderful to see a nation stand up to oppression, savagery, or totalitarianism. In other words Burma, Russia or China. Very heroic of the Canadians to do so. One cannot but notice that no offers were forthcoming from any member of ASEAN. Scared of Burma and China are we?

She should buy some wooly underware....unless she plans on staying on the west coast, which is significantly warmer than the rest of the great white north...

Thailand here had a given chance to make a stand, and-one more time- made the wrong one.....

A decent nation caring for others. Not a perfect nation by any means but a nation that reaches for and strives to be better every day. Well done my Commonwealth brothers and sisters and shame on LOS for nabbing this woman up and detaining her.

Decent leadership? That's the first time I've ever heard anyone accuse Justin "Castro Blackface" of being decent. He's a protégé of Klaus Schwab and is spear heading the shift into tyranny in the western world. He froze bank accounts of protesters and even those supporting the protesters! The man (?) is pure evil.

Well done Canada!

But I wonder if she had been a 50 year bloke with nothing much to recommend him, would they have scooped him out of the airport or told him to wait in the queue which is several years long?

Canada under Trudeau is totalitarian. He stopped people from free travel and called them Nazis. He froze their bank accounts for simply protesting. That would not happen in a free, democratic society.

This administration has rarely ever been on the right side of history. And it is likely history will not be kind to them.

To be fair, a "moral of a story" and "morality" are two different concepts.
