Over a week ago I went with my daughter and Son-in-law to negotiate details of a new Mitsubishi SUV.  Seven years ago we bought a new Suzuki for cash. Paid the money and got bill of sale same time.

Mitsu salesman and bank reps came to the house 3 times-checked birth certificate, land papers, id cards, SIL 6 month pay stubs, etc.

Finally yesterday went to finalize deal as loan approved and car ready. I didn't go as only daughter and SIL were on loan. I just told them to make sure loan rate and monthly payments were as agreed.

When they arrived home they had the SUV but no receipt of 350K down payment, no contract, no bill of sale. No paperwork at all. Salesman claimed all paperwork would be sent and received in 2 to 4 weeks. I didn't go for this but everybody told me this was how it was done in Thailand. Mitsu annd bank people explained that everything was video taped so now problem.

So question to others-Is this their experience when they bought new car?

They could have taken photo copies of the documents they signed.

I guess, then the originals, signed by the Bank would be sent to them.

The processes in Thailand are often quite clumsy regarding personal rights and customer protection etc.. but, many things such as this are the norm and have us Westerners questioning the process with ‘what if scenarios’...  I think this just one of those situations where we (you) just have to accept it.

Of course, you have photo’s / copies of the initial agreements made when you make the initial booking and agreements, right ?

I paid a down payment when I ordered my car.  Received a receipt along with the initial paperwork which laid out the agreement for additional features we agreed to have installed on the car.  On the day the car arrived I was called and made an appointment.  Showed up as the car was being finalized with the add ons, camera etc, and met with the finance folks.  Instead of going through with the finance option I payed the remaining amount for the car in Cash.  Really miffed the sales person who arranged the deal and of course the dealership as they would not be getting the extra money and of course I paid not VAT as the car was brand new and it was included in the amount to be paid.  All documents photographed as well as not walking out the door to drive away with the car without the paperwork in my hand.

So far everything I questioned I receive a photo from the dealer or the bank i.e. I questioned payments and bank sent a photo of the payment amount and interest rate. What this is a photo of I have no idea but it is from the bank. Strangely, the salesman called today and asked what day of the month we wanted so it would seem a "contract" has not been finalized.

In the states I worked in auto finance for 20 years so this is really strange to me.

Thanks everybody for the replies.

Well then, looks like you got a 3rd bite of the cherry so put you big boy pants on and go and command the situation and ensure all is as it should be. It's on finance so it's gotta go through a few more hurdles than a cash deal. All that being said, you are from that industry so best to be there and provide some calm support. Last car we brought the sales man did not know Jack, was too excited, albeit a nice guy. Being present was key in getting all done and its not like its an everyday occurrence so find the time and maybe one day when you have the knowledge, you can share it with someone who is where you are now. Pay it forward type of deal.

We got a new MG car and it was delivered on the 20th September. The finance girl caught covid and she told my wife all the paperwork is at the office.

As soon as she is back to work she will send all the paperwork to my wife.

It seems quite normal here in Thailand as far as I can see??

Anyway we have the car and all that is paid so far is the deposit so any issues they do not get anymore money.

Having said that, they have been very professional since day one so I would be very surprised if there are any problems.

OP…  Yes indeed different than in West (US) but fortunately it all works out… my head was spinning

when we bought a new MUX we traded in car ( sold to the used car guy that came to the dealership)..

Had 2 visits to the house which is 90 km from dealership. .. finalizing the deal and this was over a couple of weeks..

trade monies had to drive the sales guy to the bank to get the cash for our trade @ 400k baht used DMAX handed us the cash  We drove back to dealership finalized the deal handed over the cash … got

the new car manuals … had to wait for windows to be tinted then drove with dealer to a shop that put

on deluxe trim and loaded memory card in the factory camera..  it was an all day thing…

Paperwork was brought to the house a week or so later. Financed the balance and received paperwork from Tisco ( dealer used finance)…. In the end all good and paid off a year ago…

OK, this pretty much matches our experience so far. Will let eveyone know if all is OK when paperwork arrives. BTW, our dealer was Mitsubishi and dealer and salesman has been 10/10 so far except for no paperwork on signing. Salesman claims cameras all over so nobody can cheat. But in reality cameras are for Mitsu and not for customers.
