It's that time of year again.

Winds have shifted from the NE ,heavy rain at any time of day or night, fresh and breezy and some decent surf.

Speaking of surf, there is a small surfing scene in Songkhla (Thais) ,in the last couple of years.

Tell me about it. In Mueang Nara we get heavy rainfall daily, esp. at night. I've had enough of this rainy season already.

It's one of my favourite times of the year in Hat Yai, bring on the rain.

It's actually dry tonight for Loy Kratong which makes a change. You could even see the moon and the eclipse.

I notice the SatingPhra Weather Radar has a security glitch, so you have to go into advanced mode to see it. Big Government at work.

They've revamped (and totally screwed up) the Thai Met Office website. You used to be able to get the rainfall stats for the last 24hrs in 3hr intervals and the stats for the last 7 days. That was for the weather stations at Hat Yai Airport and Kho Hong. Now you can't find anything much apart from a 7 day forecast.

 

The Hat Yai flood alert website is working, with most of the cameras functioning, that does have the radar images.

Sure....and the season lasts longer the further south you go.

Two days no rain and the forecast is for sunshine into the New Year - seems the NE Monsoon is over for this year.

I think now the question is: when it is going to end? February has statistically been the driest month, with the transition of the monsoon from the east to the west...but it's almost March now and really strong winds from the east continue to prevail. Something's gotta give.

My  experience here in coastal Songkla province.

The easterly winds die down on the second half of April.

Rains stop around the end of Jan. though.

Late Apr-early May the transition happens but the SW monsoon is a total dud here on the coast.

Hat Yai and inland areas way more rainy.

Bottom line..enjoy the easterly breezes...they keep us cool-ish when the rest of Thailand is boiling.

The weather is certainly the oddest I've known it in the near twenty years I've been here. They're forecasting high winds and rain for next week, strong winds are already here.

That's why I live here and not Vietnam, they get hit with Typhoons too.
