Dental crown or extraction?

Featured Replies

Hi. Not my intention to hijack this thread... Just to add info from others along the same topic... Which is cost effective alternatives...

My quote today was 8k for a root canal on the back molar. 3k for a post and 10k for porcelain over metal crown. I'm 72 years old...

So... I checked a few threads from 5 years ago... where the prices stated were HALF today's prices.... Is this about right? Extraction seems OK.. If I knew I would be dead soon 555. Otherwise...

  • Get a crown. It's important for keeping the bone intact, maintaining the structure of the mouth, and ensuring proper bite. You shouldn't even get your wisdom teeth taken out unless it's unavoidable. D

  • At this occasion...This in the picture is every dentist's enemy. Have been using it for about 30 years and never had cavities again. It's not cheap and only needs to be used once a week. I always let

  • Negative effects from extraction occur over many years as the alignment of all the teeth are affected. You won't notice anything in the short term.

That sounds a little high to me.   I'm not saying  your quote is necessarily unreasonable.  Who really knows post-Covid, but I'd get at least a couple of consults with dentists who have a lot of positive reviews before deciding.  Google Maps review are an excellent way to find a good dentist ????

Despite all the fear mongering about how terrible pulling a rear tooth is in this thread.....The real truth is after the gums heal and get hard you will hardly notice one pulled rear tooth at all...

But saying this, pulling teeth is not something you want to do often, because you only have so many teeth......

@1happykamperRoot canal costs will depend on how many sessions needed and also where done -- upcountry dentists charge less.  Mine have generally been about 10k in total (Bangkok).

Costs for a crown vary greatly depending on crown material and not all crowns are equal. Roughly 10-20k depending on type of crown.

The quote you received seems normal to me.

A few months ago I had a porcelain over metal crown supplied and fitted (no root canal was required). Total cost 8,000 baht. Khon Kaen Province. Specialist dentist was very experienced having qualified in the 1970's and obtained a Master's Degree during the 1980's.

With any root canal or extraction it's best to have an Endodontist or oral surgeon perform the procedure. I had a root canal and crown about 10-12 years ago, the same root canal developed an infection 5 years later and had it fixed & cleaned out, via going into the area form the side not top down where the crown was fixed, fast forward to this past October 2022 I had to get the crowned molar removed.  It's best to keep the tooth if possible, that's why we opted for the 2nd repair. But, you can only repair so many times. In hindsight would probably go with an implant to avoid the 3x cost of fixing and replacing the same molar. It will be around 15k USD for 1 molar after this last permanent implant. That's with insurance.

Even if the root canal looks impeccably clean with X-rays it can get reinfected, it makes sense now. It's a compromised area.

None of my procedures were painful, shots not NO2. Your teeth can shift that's why you need something permanent in place.

1) root canal was not repairable, extracted the whole tooth, $1200.00 USD

2) let heal for 3 months, the new bone graft had to grow and take where the former back molar was located

3) bone graft was perfect, cut area, screwed in metal post, $1800.00 USD

4) end of Jan 2023, all should be good to go, will receive hardware that is fixed to the post where the implant will be fixed.

I used a American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery dentist/physician located in Southern California, expensive but it's your mouth and you don't want any issues and he is one of the best.

5) Will be going to Thailand in April 2023 for the implant and looking for references.

Do your research with any procedure and ask questions once you think you have a possible dentist/Dr/surgeon, etc, you are the one that has to live with it so make sure you leave nothing to chance.
