A senior monk from a temple in Nan, northern Thailand, has been arrested at the Royal Hotel in Ratchadamnoen, Bangkok, on a warrant for sexual molestation of minors under 15.

Suspicions about Phra Maha  Aphiwan, 41, had been investigated by Muang district police in Nan before a warrant was obtained.

While that was being processed the monk fled south.

He is connected to the secretariat of the abbot's office at Wat Phrathat Chang Kham.

One novice monk said he had been abused for two years. He said that if he refused to take part in the sexual abuse or revealed what was going on he would lose his educational bursary.

As the investigation proceeded another novice came forward with a similar story.

Aphiwan admitted what he had done but said it was a private matter and not connected to the temple itself.

He was taken back north to face the charges.

Thai Rath said they had information that the errant monk had accessed gay porn sites on his phone.

Sadly in this country of unaccountability together with the RTP,  Monks are the other major problem in Thailand . breaking the laws of the land with impunity and NO-ONE says anything because they are MONKS.

Like the Catholics in many other countries, hiding behind the misguided respect the Rel;gion has earnt over the years.

I predict that since this POS is a monk of higher standing he will do very little jail time if at all he is sentenced.  He will claim mental issues and subsequently be sent for treatment.  As to any compensation the public will fund that.

How he can claim it is a private issue and not associated with the temple is outrageous since he committed these vile acts on novices no doubt within temple grounds.

I really hope he is sent to an open population jail for a long time and there he gets his just deserved comeuppance.

He needs to convert to Catholicism if he wants to get away with this type of behaviour.

Other religions are no better: such abuses do happen in madrasas, ashrams, yeshivas etc, and sometimes make it to the front pages of newspapers just like in the numerous sects where devotees are used as sexual slaves.
