Google Pay and Wallet Launch in Thailand

BANGKOK (NNT) - During the pandemic, Thailand saw the rise in popularity of PromptPay and other cashless options as more people stayed home and authorities urged the public to avoid physical contact. Now Android apps Google Pay and Wallet are launching with Bangkok Bank and KTC as its initial partners.

 

Google Pay is aiming to put everything in just one app and make payments even easier than scanning a QR code.

 

Users will be able to store credit cards and make payments with a simple tap of the phone or their watch. Cardless ATM services have been introduced by many banks, but Google Pay makes even credit cards unnecessary. The system is currently limited to just Bangkok Bank and KTC credit cards and cannot yet store debit cards.

 

In addition to payments, Google Wallet also allows users to store boarding passes, thereby eliminating the need for paper passes at the airport.

Might be useful unless the Killjoy Squad dream up some hurdle to make it impossible for use unless you are a Thai citizen.  Thailand version -4.0 ????

NFC Yes, but you might not need an internet connection to use it at the shops.

I loved using my phone to pay for cr#p when I was back in Australia but sometimes it was difficult for me to find the sweet spot on the phone (I'm a klutz) so I always brought my physical card with me as a backup so I wouldn't get yelled at for holding up the line ????

You only have to look to the west what the banks and finance platforms / apps have done to people who speak out against government , closedown or frozen bank accounts , stop use of payment systems all to shut people up and control them , silenced on internet,  not a problem until it’s you or your family

In UK I don't think opposition parties or the media have had their bank accounts frozen, I'm guessing you are talking about something that happenes in Canada?

I have a BKK Bank Mastercard which I use to pay some bills with & in ATMs.  Will this do?

Sorry but cannot even remotely imagine flopping out a phone or a card for that matter, to pay for 20baht items at the local market or street food in say Bkk.

 

Worldwide one could imagine many places where this "cashless bulldust" simply will not work.

 

Yuppies gone mad, and most run the countries sadly.

We had a long power cut in my area yesterday. So if you wanted to use the internet to pay, forget it. Paper works, always, every time, never needs an internet connection. But having something that works all the time is so retro and only for dinosaurs.

Yesterday I was in a shop and the guy in front of me was trying to pay with his phone.  After five minutes I gave up and walked out of the shop.  This is not the first time this has been reported.

 

There are obviously still plenty of problems with this method of payment.

As long as your phone is charged up and has a 4g/5g sim card, why would a power cut affect it?

 

But I'm with you on preferring cash, especially given that some of my spending wouldn't look too good on my monthly credit card statement.

  Presumably because the NFC reader in the store through which you would pay requires electricity.

Doesn't the business use a terminal linked to the internet? I've rarely used my phone to pay, if ever, so I don't know.

If so could look bad for Paypal I smell a U-Turn in the works.

I would think so as its already the case elsewhere. You need QR codes if there's no NFC. The ability to swipe your card over a terminal would also avoid that problem.

No they don't I just signed up and it works! No Thai ID required they use Credit Card for verification wow smart idea Eh pity Payal never thought of that. Oh wait I thought they already did? I think Paypal Thailand is probably just being run by less clever people than google.

I think in most shops such as Lotus's and 7-11 their tills use electricity and they probably aren't able to take money without it. 

I remember a couple of times a few years ago in the UK in Tesco or Sainsbury's the power going down and they had to stop. They needed their electric tills even to take cash as they need records of transactions.

If it's a credit card, yes. If it's a debit card, no, not yet. Both card types can do what you've described however I suspect you've got a debit card so you'll have to wait like the rest of us plebs ????

Have you actually used it ?? Its a breeze and offers so many advantages. 

 

For a start you simply hold phone, be sure its unlocked (finger touch) hold near device.. Done.. Its a split second process.. You get the audio 'ching' so you know its gone and you barely need to break stride. Compare that to thewastage of cash, or god forbid granny and her QR code vaguely stabbing around the banking app trying to remember what o key in !! 

No pocket of change and wasted money in coins thrown in a jar.. 

 

You can put in all your cards to the wallet of course.. Credit debit multi currency revolut etc.. You can store 'reward' cards etc as well as driving licenses, IDs and other important personal cards.. All security protected.

In the west you can use curve to backtrack your spending up to 3 days to change cards used for better insurance protection (credit cards) or airmiles or other loyalty points per retailer.. You can integrate personal spending trackers, accounting, expense tracking etc.. Perform 'round up' pots and saving.. Have high interest depositary pots. 

You can link it to multi currency (I use revolut primarily) to maintain multiple FX balances based on your likely spending patterns.. So in my case I am in EU UK for in person card spends and online shopping USD.. All automatically debited.. 

You can link it to crypto holdings, you can link it to precious metals holdings.. 

The usual moaners are out in force over this news all over FB, clearly none of which have ever used it, and its like those dinosaurs 10 years ago boasting how thier brick nokia 3310 'does everything I need.. Calls AND sms... Why would I want a smartphone'.. OK gramps never mind.. 

Fintec is advancing rapidly, GPay is simply one retail interface of it, its fast and beats cash..

Google pay is a totally different problem.. 

Google is just spending.. Paypal is caught up in the tax collection and unregistered illegal businesses problem..

The farangs complaining about the loss of paypal are (almost all) really complaining thier unregistered business cannot keep operating illegally and avoiding Thai taxes and laws. Theres nothing that paypal does for consumer transactions that isnt dont better by wise, only the cart, subscription, web shop integrations (which are all available to an incorporated Thai entity) that Paypal is is what they miss.
