Superb England set to meet France in World Cup QF after Senegal demolition

England were superb in every department last night as they comprehensively beat African Cup of Nations' champions Senegal 3-0.

The Three Lions rode their luck a little in the early stages with Sarr having the best scoring opportunity of the match that the Watford striker blazed over. Pickford also saved crucially.

But a quick-fire brace before half-time from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane essentially settled the match. Bukayo Saka added a brilliant chipped third in the second half showing admirable maturity.

England are the leading scorers at the tournament and are looking like a real team, not a collection of individuals. They have also shown strong defensive qualities with Maguire putting his poor Man Utd form well behind him.

As a Spurs fan I may be biased, but I thought Kane's performance was exceptional. His hold-up play coming deep was marvellous and he capped his display with a typically clinical goal.

Many on social media were singing the praises of 19 year old midfielder June Bellingham who also had a brilliant and mature first half before being substituted in the second.

Manager Gareth Southgate's selection of Henderson was also vindicated.

France - who England meet in the quarter finals on Saturday (2am next Sunday Thai time) - showed they were far less of a real team.

They relied on Mbappe in particular who lashed in two great goals as Les Bleus beat Poland in the earlier match 3-1.

Indeed Poland may well have been one or two ahead before Giroud found the net with an instinctive turn and shot as the game approached half-time.

With Poland pushing forward in the second half Mbappe took full advantage.

If England can keep Mbappe under wraps at the weekend I predict a win for England and expect them to meet Morocco or Spain in the semis then Brazil or the Netherlands in the final.

England vs Brazil would be incredible, win or lose! For this football fan and many others like me it would be an experience of a lifetime and represent a "coming home" after their famous encounter in Mexico 52 years ago.

Today's action from Qatar sees Japan play Croatia at 10pm Thai time and Brazil meet South Korea at 2am in the continuing round of 16.

Croatia are a shadow of their former selves and I expect Japan to stick with their trademark counter attacking game and win again.

Brazil are very solid defensively and with Neymar thought to be back after injury I expect them to win narrowly against the spirited Koreans.

The final games in the last 16 are tomorrow with Morocco vs Spain at 10 pm Thai time and Portugal vs Switzerland at 2 am, early Wednesday morning.

Latest Betfair exchange odds have France at 5-1 and England now down to a little over 7-1. For me Morocco represent the best value at 120-1 but a longshot has never won the World Cup in all its illustrious history.

The BBC led with a headline that said "Southgate's critics must admit he got it spot on again" after his team selection came up trumps.

In disturbing news they also reported that Raheem Sterling had had to return home to London after an armed break-in at his home where his family were in. He has three young children.

The Chelsea forward, 27, scored in England's 6-2 rout of Iran in the group stages. His previous home in Cheshire was also targeted in an attempted break-in in 2018.

Bellingham is the missing piece of the jigsaw.  Perhaps he already is the best midfielder- what a box of tricks, with young legs too.

The UK bookies have odds for the win at:

France 11/8
England 2/1

"France - who England meet in the quarter finals on Saturday (2am next Sunday Thai time) - showed they were far less of a real team."

I have not seen England-Senegal , but I have seen France- Poland, and I don't agree when you say that France is not a real team

If Mbappé scores goals , its because other players play with him, if he is on his own, he cant's score goals , Giroud, Grizmann, Rabiot, Dembelle are pretty good

Next match against the French

Harry Maguire needs to kick Mbappe into the front row of seats in the first five minutes. It would be his most meaningful contribution playing for England. He does have to get close enough to do the deed and that could be his failng.

Yet another 2am game for England with all the bars closed.   Sigh.   This is not a great country to be in for this world cup with the puritanical joy sponges in charge not allowing the bars to be open for half of the matches.

Kyle Walker is the one who will be charged with containing Mbappe, and he is probably the only England defender who is quick enough to do this. For me, Giroud could present a bigger threat to Maguire and Stones.

I would prefer Maguire getting a red card rather than Walker. Giroud would have a field day against him.

The next one will be better time-wise, US, Canada, Mexico.
