webfact Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 By Thanaphum Charoensombatpanich Bangkok Governor Chartchart Sittipunt has plans to collect provincial taxes on gasoline, tobacco, and hotel industry, a move that would likely raise the prices for the already high gasoline that is retailing and has been blamed for the surging inflation. “There is no final decision made on this issue yet,” Chadchart told Thai Enquirer although admitting that the BMA was in need to look for more sources of funding as its funding needs are more than the 79.71 billion Baht it is allocated annually. The budget for 2023 is slated to be used mostly for the easing of the biggest problems in the city – flooding and traffic congestion. Shuya Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 City tax on hotel accomodation will work, whereas a 10 satang supplement on gas will have the Thais drive to other provinces to 'save money'... 1 1

Popular Post MRToMRT Posted December 6, 2022 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2022 "According to sources the biggest chunk of the tax collection would come from the more than 160,000 hotel rooms that are there in Bangkok." Personally I would go for property taxation, especially in wealthy areas and for new constructions. I had a condo in BKK in the centre of the city and paid just 300 baht BMA tax a year. Why always stinging the visitors, make the populace pay their share. 3 1

He probably did, incl his own share of that, and concluded that with surging prices they need to increase either their kickback percentage or the total spending to keep their income aligned with inflation. Seems they going for the latter...
Metapod Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 Taxes are theft. Governments don't need more money. They have no profit incentive and noone to hold them accountable for how they spend/waste public funds. If they can't manage with 80 billion thb a year they need to work harder and smarter with the existing funds. 1
Xonax Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 I would rather suggest taxing vacant land plots and land with uninhabited buildings in Bangkok. 1

Miss-appropriation of funds by the government, they don't need submarines or F-35's.. Use the money to finance infrastructure. 1
