Pattaya Police and Immigration step up overstay checks and safety patrols around Pattaya

Pattaya —  Despite being very unpopular among tourists, Pattaya police continued their intense crackdown on nightlife venues almost every night as a deterrent to the venues breaking regulations and violent incidents. This coincides with Thai Immigration conducting random passport checks on foreigners across the city, hunting for people who have overstayed their visas as part of a national crackdown campaign.

Pattaya law enforcement and city officials descended on Pattaya Walking Street at 9 PM yesterday, December 7th, to remind venue operators to comply with the legal closing time at 2 AM and to check if they were operating legally. At the same time, Immigration agents toured Soi 6 and other entertainment zones, randomly asking tourists for proof of their legal status to stay in Thailand. We recently covered the overstay crackdown in this article here.

The officers also inspected the fire exits and conditions of each facility. They stressed to the operators that they must strictly comply with safety precautions such as keeping their fire exits open at all times.

  • going around random streets at night asking tourists who are on holiday enjoying themselves to see their passports is NOT good police work.   It is harassment, plain and simple.

  • They are not 'random streets'.... I haven't had them in mine. I have never ever been asked to show my passport in Pattaya on a night out. 18 years and counting! It happens in China, Russia, Hondu

  • Suggestions.....? We have a Forum that bangs on and on and on and on how Thai police do not do their jobs..... here we have them doing exactly that and people complain. They are sweeping up after

They are doing their job ????????????????. And it's good to see that. Too many people had been used to a situation where everything was up to them for too long and therefore didn't care about laws and regulations. And it is not only nightlife and immigration. Look at the recent meat scandals. Obviously even more needs to be done. Will skip my breakfast again... ????

It happens in China, Russia, Honduras, Venezuela... lots of places. There are loads of tourists about, they seem to be handling it.

This report seems to be more a check on the venues... personally I am pleased to see fire safety being checked... God forbid an incident like the Mountain B in town.

LOL. So Thailand is now in the same boat as those wonderful places? ????

jeez, this place really has gone down hill, further than I initially thought..

It will all die down, happened before, a reset is needed after the Covid....

what do you mean??

I thought thailand wanted tourists back here for the money.

harassing them on the streets is hardly going to make them want to come back, is it?

what is this reset you are talking about?

the tourists are back they should be happy that they are back and spending, not treating everyone like potential criminals/overstayers...

Just making room for the Chinese who will overrun the country, now that Covid is gone  and replaced by a new milder virus.

There are a lot of dodgy Visas out there granted during Covid... people became volunteers without doing anything, as an example. Visa categories where changed without leaving the country. A large number of people lived in Thailand on Covid extensions, which are no longer available. A lot of new businesses have sprung up post Covid, I suspect many were not safety inspected.. we had bars proclaiming to be restaurants ... not a gas ring in sight!

The tourists are back, and a bit of hassle does not seem to bother them too much... except for a few cry-babies. It will die down....

Yet you fail to say what is their job and under whose authority you get to define what is their job.

Checking fire escapes would seem a good thing to me, but checking and condemning would mean most of Walking Street would be closed.

Nope, Webfact said it, the same source you trusted to speak for all tourists!

You should know how it works here....a certain group are never guilty of wrongdoing, the victims suffer. But a person on overstay only has himself to blame.
