48 is way to young to be dying. He thought he had bronchitis, but I do not think that is what he died from.  It sounds like a sudden myocardial infarction.  Hope they update the story, he was a good sportswriter and I started reading his articles in 1997 when I subscribed to SI. May the man RIP.
