Daily News Thai Caption: Jail me instead

Daily News reported from the police station in Ayutthaya, central Thailand, where a 19 year old student at a university who they called by the fictitious name Suay said she had been duped.

She met Pol Capt Panya Amatsanao showing him the movements in her account book and the picture of a woman she knew only as Na.

"A" - the media now changed her name - said that she had gone to a shopping center to get part-time work as a sales lady.

While there she was accosted by a woman called Na who said that she was a trader at Wat Phrayat intersection. The two chatted and hit it off.

Na explained that the newest phase of the "Let's Go Halves" initiative was starting and she should apply.

Na was only too willing to help spending time getting A's details and sorting out the application process.

In reality "Na" is a fraudster who managed to gain control over her account.

The account was later found to have been shut.

It was swiftly used to launder 390,000 baht of money that had been defrauded from people across multiple police precincts then transferred to her account without her knowledge.

After meeting Na, A got calls from far and wide saying her account was used and that she was named in summonses as far afield as Nong Khai.

She said she was completely innocent but said she had no money to pay back the victims and would have to go to jail instead.

Panthip, her mother, said that her daughter was the victim of crime and had done nothing wrong.

The family had no money to help her.

She should be strongly reprimanded just for being stupid and dumb not thinking that any one who asks her to do such thing is up to no good, or maybe she knew and just took the chance?...

I was of the understanding that Thai's in general and for the most part are not all that sophisticated about finance.  Being stupid isn't against the law in Thailand yet, got to build a heck of a lot more jails first.

Well if she's that stupid she should give up the idea of university.

I think most of us can accept that the majority of young Thai ladies straight outta the education system have all the street smarts of a Sea Cucumber?

She doesn’t deserve to go to jail for being conned, nobody does?

She was probably promised she would makes lots of money.  Greed blinds.

In this case the daughter was as much a victim as the victims.. the real fraudster is still at large.

Hopefully she met "Na" and that photo is of the actual fraudster. If so, then Na isn't overly clever, since surely it's possible to match her photos to a database and discover her identity.

Most such fraudsters would use someone else's photo and never meet in person. That way it's very difficult to trace them.

It's a painful lesson for A but I think she will avoid jail time. At the same time, there will be one less guillible Thai available to criminal gangs.
