KHAO SAN road entrepreneurs have cancelled New Year countdown celebration at the popular tourist strip citing request by several government agencies in refraining from organising festivities to welcome the New Year due to the current fragile state of mind of the Thai people, TV Channel 7 said this morning (Dec. 24).

Mr. Sanga Ruangwatanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Entrepreneurs Association, said their members agreed with this viewpoint and while the strip will be open for business as usual, with this including pubs and bars, there will be no decorations like last year.

The suggestion was no announcement so that new year celebrations can go ahead as planned, then they cancel them anyway all over the place. Thai people don't have a fragile stater of mind, what a laughable suggestion. Of course KSR caters for foreigners anyway which makes it even more ridiculous. Get on with you know what and stop the lies.

Instead of a big fuss there would be a giant ball for tourists to take pictures with and live TV scenes from other places around the world celebrating New Year.

A giant ball you say ! That will have the masses lining up for miles to see ????

Sounds like case of didn’t get late opening which would have made them a tidy sum , so they said well if that’s the case we will make the place look like a graveyard ! ????

My goodness. There are other reasons why the new year celebrations will be more subdued this year. In the meantime everyone should know the reason already.

If they just came out and said the real reason I'm sure the tourists would understand and if they suggested a colour to wear in support and well wishes you would see a sea of that colour I'm sure. Now it looks like you advertise, draw people in then cancel this will anger people who have spent thousands to holiday, party and celebrate.

The street's traders' association chief Sagna Reuangwattanakun said he was responding to official requests to tone down celebrations during this "delicate" time for the Thai people.

Orders from above, you will obey.
