6,992 Drunk-Driving Cases Recorded in 6 Days

BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) – There were 6,992 drunk-driving cases in six days and the country needed serious measures on the wrongdoers, according to the director-general of the Probation Department.

 

Weerakit Harnpariphan, director-general of the department, said courts ordered probation for 6,992 drunk-driving cases from Dec 29, 2022, to Jan 3, 2023. They formed 96.08% of the 7,277 cases in which probation was ordered during the same period.

Why only probation?  Drunk driving is clearly an offence, so should be punished accordingly.  In UK and other countries, I believe, Being caught drunk driving (DWI) it is a certainty that you will loose your license for a year, which is a more powerful deterrent that simply probation,

If Thailand really is serious about improving road safety, then the punishments nee to really hurt.

IMO this could be the expected result in 6 day period throughout the year if police actually made an effort to catch them, in fact it could be even higher than this since some of the regulars may have considered a higher chance of getting caught so didn't - and yes - Thailand has a serious drink driving problem, part of the reason it not addressed is because those tasked to address it are some of the worst offenders

How many paid there way out of it, I would say times that x 10 at least.

i agree, but making an effort to catch them 365 days a would be a good start, the police have no interest in doing so it seems so it will continue

There was a story just a few days ago indicating these folks would be fined, lose their license for a year and go to jail. Guess not. This is the most non-credible police force in history. More like Keystone Cops than real cops.

An astonishing figure considering the lack of enforcement that goes on here. As a comparison the UK has approximately 500 cases per week.

Probation , How long ,a couple of weeks , now don't do that again...

DUI is not been taken seriously ,it's a joke .
