Sanook Thai Caption: Cap: Subsidence causes crane collapse

Sanook reported that yesterday morning Pratunam Chulalongkorn police and rescue services went to a construction site next to the Ratchathewi 2 Hospital in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani, north of the Thai capital Bangkok.

A crane had collapsed into scaffolding due to subsidence in the ground.

It collapsed onto three male workers on the scaffolding. One was named as Anucha, 48.

They were all taken to hospital.

Police are looking to interview the site manager to investigate the subsidence claims.

Everyone likes to have an opinion. So the crane is mobile, therefore it can only be the operator’s fault for sitting the crane in an unsuitable area. The land wouldn’t have subsided if the crane wasn’t there. But trying to get a Thai own up to a mistake is neigh on impossible, they will blame the nearest inanimate object. Ie flip flops under the pedal.

Was it simply subsidence or did the crane topple over because thr boom was over extended and over its SWL.

If the ground was soft then the crane operator should have identified that safety issue before the lift and then should have advised the construction team to make him a hard stand to lift of off, so operator error.

BUT without a proper investigation by someone trained to investigate crane failures the true root cause will never be identified. They might as well have blamed it on brake failure.
