January 7, 20233 yr Have accumulated a dozen or more various paints over the past 6 months ago all have been sealed properly, well as best one can with the stupid plastic lids on some of them BUT opening one today, it had a very liquid top and stank of Urine this is the second one to have done this, the others are fine and look like paint. Surely this is not normal.. they are all quality brands, not the cheap crappy stuff Why does it stink of urine...

January 7, 20233 yr Were these paints emulsions and did you add tap water to thin them out ? I never add water to a paint in its container otherwise the bacteria in the tap water ruins it no matter if its well sealed. Decant into another container first , then thin out, preferably with bottled water or from a kettle.

Sometimes I am surprised how fast and competent some companies answer.
January 7, 20233 yr Had a red four seasons for ten years, still paints but the stench on that is gut wrenching, worse than any other colour, keeps the mrs away though!
January 7, 20233 yr Contact the manufacturer and supplier. Some of the additives will break from the emulsion and have to be remixed. Other times, external contamination/ bacteria/ large temperature swings can cause separation or odour. Many latex paints use ammonia as a pH adjuster during the latex reaction which can give a strong odor. Some may use mercaptans in the formulation. As an example of the odour many are familiar with, Natural Gas ( methane) is doped with mercaptan for consumer natural gas to allow easy leak detection and to get occupants out of the building. The antimicrobials added during the formulation generally will last up to a year with the container unopened. Old paint or improper storage will accelerate loss of antimicrobial function. Contamination from the brush used after applying to the surface and repeatedly dipping in the can may overwhelm the antimicrobial. One reason to always pour from the supply container to a secondary container for painting and not dip the brush in the supply can.
