Strange Internet/wifi problem

and yes, it also looks like a DNS problem, check which DNS servers are used on your devices and in your router's web interface.

also check this:

Could be the DNS of the ISP redirecting the domain to something like a wifi sign-in portal page (3BB likes to do that for example if some payment is due). This would fail because they don't have a valid certificate for those domains and only works without HTTPS encryption.

What happen if you try to open http://example.com which does not run under HTTPS?

- do HTTP websites work?

check the date and time on all your devices including the router (through its web interface), the secure connection would not establish if the date is wrong because applications will think that the SSL certificate is invalid because it is either not yet issued or outdated.

The screenshot is from a previous day. The issue have been ongoing for about a month now.

OK, I will try the below when I meet the CAT guy:

https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-find-out-dns-for-router/

I have tried both http and https, both same problem.

"same" = "could not establish secure connection"?  there is a redirect to HTTPS then, or your browser forces HTTPS redirect.

try another HTTP-only website, for example http://mirror.centos.org/

make sure you see exactly "http" in the address bar, not "https", and if you see "https" - change to "http" manually.

Just calling you out on your BS ???? Please do explain how what you posted can cause his iOS Safari to fail to open those pages. Or how it relates to the loading working when tethering through the phone. Maybe I'll be able to learn something new?

It is like talking to children. It is because Safari have been compiled to be compatible. As for BS learn a little bit more before you come over as all rightous.

I will certainly try this, except I don't have a PC only mobile device.

I am meeting the CAT guy, he might bring a PC and then we can try, but unfortunately not until February. Will report back.

You can get Brave for the mobile. It is pretty good as well.

The browser issue is just part of, most likely, the same problem. More annoying os that the temperature sensor only sporadic upload data.

It all worked fine up until a month ago, but then something happened.

This is where you need to start looking.  What happened?

If you didn't change any settings, which of your programs have auto-update enabled?

And when was the latest windows update?  Doesn't that usually occur during the first week of the month?

Maybe do a googles of recent internet postings to see if there are other users complaining of random bits of software suddenly not working properly during the past ten days.

Again, I'll call out your BS. "Compiled to be compatible" haha sorry you're talking out of your behind. You've probably never compiled an app in your life. The page does *not* load in his Safari as you could see in the screenshot. It throws an error that the TLS connection fails. This is either a network error or certificate issue and has *nothing* to do with browser compatibility. He said even HTTP sites fail so certificates are probably not the real issue and it's something network related. Are you seriously suggesting that major websites fail to let Safari connect? Hilarious. I just tried that very same website in Safari and it works just fine over my Wifi. And why would that change for him if the connection goes over mobile data instead of Wifi?

Talking to a kid haha, it's usually the kids that throw around insults if they have no proper argument so who's the kid in the conversation? ????

As fdsa said the error can't be 100% the same when trying to load HTTP as there is no secure connection that can fail. Can you post that error?

Another thing that could help identify the issue is if any other people who come to your house and use your Wifi have also connection issues.

Is it *all* sites not loading or just some?

Start Firefox with all extensions disabled and try your sites.

Could be some incompatibility.

Some sites do seem to work better with Chrome, however. It has by far the largest market share.

Yes, can an also open Firefox and click on "New Private Window."  If the website works, than an extension is causing a problem.

Extensions may also be enabled in the Private window, depending on whether the user enabled them at installation or thereafter.

I didn't know that.  I always thought Private Window in Firefox and Incognito in Chrome were vanilla browsers.

Why would someone make these windows the same as their regular browser window?

Because they're concerned mainly with privacy and may want their preferred extensions available in the private window as well, e. g. ad blocker.

Ok. Thanks.  I'll have to look into this.  I think I have been using these window incorrectly for quite some time.

  • 5 weeks later...

CAT showed up, tested the wifi and installed a new ZTE router. Funny enough it has a separate little receiver box for the fiber optic cable.

According to the CAT guy previous Huawei router was old and to protect itself from viruses it block certain sites, hence why it was blocking my temperature signal and some site when using iPhone.

I have never heard of such a feature,  but the CAT guy seemed competent enough and it is working fine now, so maybe?

Cheers for the update. I could imagine that the Huawei router had some kind of censorship functionality that maybe couldn't get updated because the router was too old. Glad it's resolved but sad that it took over a month for CAT to fix.

@Photoguy21 so much for browser compatibility. Maybe the folks in this thread knew a little bit more how things work than you thought, hu? ????

Doubt it, it is how I earn my money but with little information to go on and no logs taken form it, it is pure guess work.

Poor guess work. But go on doubting even when faced with facts. Guess what, other people here might also be earning their money in this industry and could have a itsy bitsy more knowledge. I suggest next time not being so confrontational and condensenting to avoid embarassment like here. Cheers.

An incompatible security update sound like a very plausible reason. After working fine for years,  the fault just appeared one day, probably when some IT jockey implemented the security update.

No fault of CAT for being late. The location is at a summerhouse and we have been away. I wanted to be present, to ensure the sensor problem was fixed.

The CAT guy was actually a CAT/TOT service representative, since the two companies are merging there Internet services.

Thanks for all the suggestions  and hopefully we all learned something from the process.
