One territorial defence volunteer was killed and two were injured in an ambush by southern insurgents in a village in the Si Sakhon district of Thailand’s southern province of Narathiwat province this morning (Wednesday).

The ambush took place as the eight volunteers, riding four motorcycles, were returning to their base at about 8am, after having completed their routine mission to provide security for teachers at a school in Ban Aiyaeng.

An unknown number of insurgents, hidden in the woods beside the road, detonated an explosive device and opened fire on the volunteers with automatic weapons, killing one and injuring two. One motorcycle was damaged.

Insurgents sounds so much better than islamic terrorists, which would be a more fitting description

Defending the sovereignty of your nation is terrorism?

Read the history of the Kingdom of Patani.

The Kingdom of Siam/Thailand invaded the caliphate and forcibly annexed it into Siam/Thailand. Dominated by Budhists. Very similar to what Russia is now attempting with its invasion of Ukraine. Russia calls Ukrainian soldiers "terrorists" too for attacking Russia.

"Defense volunters" are better called 'paramilitary.' They are essentially paid mercenaries for the Thai military. They have access to RTM armory and bases. They do not defend Muslim institutions and its people from forced integration into Thai Buddhist traditions and culture.

They take their orders from Thailand"s Internal Security Operations Command, the political arm of the Royal Thai Military. Basically the RTM uses defense volunteers as "cannon fodder" on patrols so as to not endanger RTM soldiers.

By that logic the mad ginger woman in Scotland should declare war on England and you would defend the murder of Englishmen ?

And the insurgents use them as a ready source of new weapons, you can be sure they stripped them of any guns and ammo before they left the scene.

Until the Thai government engage in serious negotiations, that includes the recognition of the local language, and granting more autonomy to the southern provinces,  sadly the violence will continue.

We've had 20 years of stick to no avail, maybe it's time they tried the carrot.
