"I'm not mean" says forthright Som Tam lady after sign barring hawkers angers netizens

A Som Tam seller in Muang Rayong has hit back after netizens called her mean.

 

Accusations of "Mae Kha Jai Dam" (black hearted trader) were rife after Thanchanok, 32, put a sign outside her shop barring hawkers inside.

 

Sanook went there and found the sign still in place.

 

Thanchanok cut a strong figure as she prepared papaya salad and yam for a restaurant full of customers. The road was lined with cars.

 

The heavily tattooed lady admitted that she had "quite a mouth on her" but she denied being mean.

 

A female hawker had been creating trouble for her customers by pestering them to buy things.

 

If they refused she persisted creating further annoyance.

 

Enough was enough and so she decided to bar hawkers to protect her customers.

 

Her mum Rasamee, 55, agreed with her actions.

 

Hawkers could still sell out front of the shop but not inside.

I wish more places would follow her lead. I hate being pestered when I'm eating.

Nothing wrong with that... 

... She’s perfectly within her rights to protect her customers from being hassled by people strolling through and interrupting their dinner... 

 

Hawkers can often be an exceptional pain in the neck....  They can often be a hassle when trying to relax on a beach... The walk up, stand-in front of you and stay their until you say no about 10x....  then 5 mins later another one comes along... its sometimes a challenge not to get irritated by them. 

 

Yes, they are trying to earn a living and I’m sympathetic to that... but there is also a balance and getting repeatedly hassled crosses a line.

 

I’d rather be eating in a restaurant that doesn’t allow hawkers from outside to come around the tables and hassle us.

Good on her. I wish more restaurant owners would prevent these unwanted hawkers from disturbing peaceful patrons.
