Five excise officials deny extorting grocer in fake cigarette case - NACC investigating

Thai Rath reported on a case in which a grocer in northern Bangkok has claimed that fake, illegal, cigarettes were planted in her store and then she was extorted by Excise officials.

 

Sunnaporn Bunkert, a grocer in Pahonyothin Soi 52, went to the social action group Sai Mai Tong Rort saying she was framed and extorted. She is known as "Aunty Porn" in the case.

 

She claimed that the excise men wanted 20,000 baht to not take her to the police. She bargained it down to 5,500 baht and the men left.

 

In latest developments the five officers concerned surrendered to the Bang Khen police late at night on Monday after a summons on charges of extortion and malfeasance was issued.

 

They all denied everything.

 

Station chief Pol Col Anan Worasatlet them go as they had surrendered by their own volition and did not represent a flight risk.

 

Thai Rath said that CCTV outside the store showed the men arrive in a van and park 20 meters away.

 

Store CCTV showed that one went into the store while Aunty Porn was being questioned before the cigarettes were "found".

 

Ultimately the 5,500 baht that was allegedly extorted was stuffed into an ice bucket in the excise official's vehicle before they left.

 

Unusually all were named in the Thai Rath article.

 

The case is being investigated by the office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Got to believe this woman and good for her for standing up as others might think twice.

 

I hope that the CCTV shows him putting the money in the ice bucket, because that would be game, set and match. 

 

If it is proven, hefty jail terms, like 20 years should deter others.

They just can't help themselves, even extorting elderly private shop owners out of hard earned money.

If she truly broke the law why was she not arrested, taken to a police station and questioned  while the interview was being recorded or in the presence of a witness?

I totally agree, but if its proven they will get a slap on the wrist, maybe a small fine and 'don't do it again' ?

Only a suspicious, skeptical, small minded person would think that a Thai official whose sworn loyalty to the crown and the people forbids him to be involved in corruption could do such a thing, he should look to his political masters as an example on how to behave. ????
