Siam Rath followed up on the devastating fire that razed a Metropolitan Police District 5 building in Sathorn Soi 8 to the ground in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Seven state and private vehicles were also damaged - two were destroyed, 5 damaged a lttle. No one was hurt.

It broke out at 4.30 am and the cause is thought to be a short circuit in an old air conditioning compressor, said Met 5 chief Pol Maj-Gen Tawatkiat Jindakhuansanong.

He added that the building would likely be demolished.

No important documents related to legal cases were kept there so there is no effect on matters in court.

RTP chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat has stated that the building would be rebuilt and that it was too early to say what other documents were affected.

A similar problem caused a massive fire in what is now the Intercontinental Hotel on Sukhumvit. It happened the day before the (new) building was due to open. As the law demanded, a sprinkler system was installed, but there was no law to say it had to be turned on. And it wasn't. People had to be lifted off the roof by helicopter and landed at the nearby police hospital. I happened to pass by about 10 minutes after it started and it provided an afternoon's entertainment. The BP has, or had, huge photos of the fire in a corridor.
